    • A chromate conversion coating with excellent cold workability and protection against corrosion after subsequent painting can be formed on metal surfaces, particularly on galvanized steel sheet, by drying in place on the metal an amount of an acidic aqueous composition comprising (A) from 4.0 to 51.0 g/L of hexavalent chromium; (B) from 6.0 to 38.0 g/L of trivalent chromium; (C) from 0.5 to 97.0 g/L of phosphate ions; (D) a component selected from the group consisting of sulfate ions, nitrate ions, fluoride ions, and mixtures thereof; and (E) a component selected from the group consisting of cations of Cu, Co, Ni, Sn, Fe, and Pb and mixtures thereof, wherein the trivalent chromium/hexavalent chromium weight ratio is in the range from 0.2 to 1.4. Preferably the amount of aqueous composition used is such as to produce a chromium add-on of from 20-160 mg/m .

    • An autodepositing aqueous coating composition has a pH of 1.6 to 5.0 and comprises resin solids, acid, oxidising agent, water, anionic surfactant either as a free component or as a copolymerized component in the said resin, and other optional components, with the resin solids being dispersed in the water and being polymer resin solids principally composed of specified proportions of the following monomers: (A) methyl methacrylate and/or acrylonitrile, (B) ethyl acrylate and/or butyl acrylate, and (C) acrylic acid and/or methacrylic acid and with the anionic surfactant being present in a specified proportion based on the total amount of the said components (A), (B), and (C). Such an autodepositing composition produces on active metal surfaces contacted with it a high corrosion-resistant coating, even without any post-treatment with an aqueous hexavalent chromium solution.

    • The invention is an aqueous autodeposition coating composition that produces a film that has a better adherence and corrosion resistance than the films formed by the prior-art coating compositions, but which does so without a rinse treatment (for example, a chromium containing solution, rinse) prior to film curing. The aqueous autodeposition coating composition has a pH of 1.6 to 5.0 and contains (i) water-dispersible or water-soluble organic film-forming resin, (ii) at least one of fluoride ions or fluoride ions and complex fluoride ions, (iii) hexavalent chromium ion or hexavalent chromium ion + trivalent chromium ion, and (iv) tungstate ion and/or molybdate ion.
