    • The present invention relates to a distribution system including a fibre optic cable network which allows the distribution of broadcast video and/or audio data received by apparatus at a receiving location to apparatus at one or more user locations to allow for example, radio and/or television programming to be available for selection. In accordance with the invention the transmission of command data signals through the distribution system is possible in an optical format to apparatus at the user and receiving locations is possible to allow the control and change of operation of selected apparatus connected to the distribution system to be achieved on an ongoing basis. Typically the command signal data is transmitted at a different, most typically lower, frequency than the video and/or audio data.

    • The invention relates to a distribution network for broadcast data which is received at a receiving means location. The network typically includes a plurality of cable connections which carry the data in an RF or more typically an optical mode into which the same is converted at the receiving means location. A plurality of decoding means locations are connected to the common receiving means via the network and each of the decoding means receives substantially all of the received data simultaneously from said receiving means. The receiving means may include a satellite antenna and LNB for receiving data transmitted by satellite and also antenna for receiving digital terrestrial television data and/or digital audio broadcast data. The decoding means at each location can be independently controlled by a respective user at that location to request any of the data received at the receiving means simultaneously. Thus each user can control, without the need to refer to or be impacted by the user selections made on other decoding means connected to the system at that time.

    • A waveguide for use in apparatus for receiving transmitted data signals is provided. The waveguide includes first, second and third channels with the received data entering the first channel and components of the received data, signals being selectively deflected from the first channel into the second or third channels. The form of the components depends on whether the data signals have circular or linear polarity. The components leave the waveguide in substantially the same phase as which they entered the waveguide thereby allowing the same to be subsequently processed. The provision of the waveguide allows the receiving apparatus to be used to receive data signals with either circular and/or linear polarity and be subsequently processed.
