    • A novel process for the manufacture of a cinnamic acid derivative of formula (I) wherein R signifies hydrogen or C1-8-alkyl and R signifies hydrogen, C1-10-alkyl, C1-10-hydroxyalkyl or C1-4-hydroxyalkyl or C1-4-alkoxy-C1-10-alkyl, is described in which a 4-R O-halobenzene is reacted with acrylic acid or an acrylic acid ester CH2=CHCOOR using a heterogeneous palladium catalyst in the presence of the alkanoic acid ammonium salt formed from a C2-5-alkanoic acid and an aliphatic mono-, di- or trialkylamine or heterocyclic amine. In the case of the manufacture of the cinnamic acid derivative (I) in which R signifies hydrogen, the reaction can be carried out in the presence of the amine in place of the alkanoic acid ammonium salt. A further aspect of the described invention comprises reacting the 4-R 0-iodobenzene with the product of the Michael addition of an acrylic acid ester CH2=CHCOOR , wherein R has the above significance of R except hydrogen, with an aliphatic or heterocyclic primary or secondary amine using a heterogeneous palladium catalyst and in the presence of a C2-5-alkanoic acid in order to manufacture the above cinnamic acid derivatives with the exception of the substituted cinnamic acid itself. In view of their UV-B absorbing properties the thus-manufactured cinnamic acid derivatives are suitable as UV-B filters for cosmetic agents, e.g. sunscreen agents.

    • Oil-in-water (O/W) and water-in-oil (W/O) microemulsions of fragrance product formulations are provided. The microemulsions are clear or at least translucent, sprayable, and nonsticky. Novel combinations of anionic surfactant components (a) and hydrophilic coactives (highly water soluble component (b) or a mixture of highly water soluble (b)(i) and less water soluble polar (b)(ii) components) are used to obtain fragrance product formulations that are free or substantially free of ethanol. The anionic surfactants have a hydrophilic-lipophilic balance ("HLB") modified by the use of classes of anionic surfactant components (a) and commercially available hydrophilic component coactives ((b) or mixture of (b)(i) and (b)(ii)), not previously recognized as effective in this type of system. Highly, preferably infinitely, water soluble coactives (b) as well as mixtures of highly, preferably infinitely, water soluble coactives (b)(i) with other less water soluble polar coactives (b)(ii), modify the HLB of anionic surfactants in such a way as to enable the formation of stable, clear microemulsions of fragrance product compositions. These compositions contain lower ratios of surfactant to oil than conventional nonionic (or ionic surfactants with lipophilic coactives) aqueous or alcohol free compositions. As such, the present fragrance compositions are sprayable and nonsticky.
