摘要： An oilfield elevator is disclosed and has first and second body halves pivotally-coupled at a hinge and moveable between an open position and a closed position to receive and move a tubular segment. Slips are slidably received within corresponding tapered slots in the elevator and are configured to translate vertically within the tapered slots and, at the same time, radially so as to be able to capture a wider range of tubular having varied outside diameters. Tension handles are pivotally-coupled to the first and second body halves and moveable between locked and unlocked positions. Locking the tension handles engages the slips via biasing members, and forces the slips into radial contact with the tubular segment. Unlocking the tension handles releases the biasing members.

摘要： Method and apparatus for handling a supported tubular string (14) with a string elevator (12) and a spider (16) on a rig to prevent damaging contact between the string elevator (12) and spider (16) while facilitating further connections of add-on tubular segments. The string elevator (12) and supported tubular string (14) descend toward the spider (16) until reaching a predetermined position. The process of setting the spider (16) into engagement of the tubular string (14) is automatically initiated in response to detecting the predetermined position of the string elevator (12). With the spider set, the string elevator can be unloaded. Optionally, the method may also automatically terminate the string elevator descent in response to detecting that the spider (16) has been set. A preferred apparatus for detecting the position of the elevator includes a tilt switch (32) secured to a fixed position along the length of the Kelly hose.

摘要： A wellbore tubular handling system and method is provided for operation in holding and lowering tubulars, such as casing strings (34), at a rig site. The handling system utilizes a plurality of interchangeable gripping modules (54) for use with both the elevator slips (78) and the spider (18). Because the gripping modules (54) are completely interchangeable, only one additional gripping module (54) is needed to provided 100 % redundancy at the well site to thereby reduce the equipment normally required by approximately 25 %. An elevator module (52) receives the interchangeable gripping module (54) therein. An interchangeable gripping module (54) may also preferably be flush mounted in many standard rotary table types. Alternatively a top mount spider module (140) is provided to receive a gripping module (54) for other rig floor (24) and/or rotary table constructions. The gripping module (54) has three inner support rings (80,82,84) and slips (78) between approximately one and two feet in length to permit high load support while protecting any thin walled casing that is used in the casing string (34).
