摘要： The invention relates to an improved emission control system. The system has particular applicability for use in an internal combustion engine (10) utilising alternative fuels such as natural gas. More particularly, the invention provides an apparatus and method wherein hydrogen is removed by a conditioning catalyst (16) from the exhaust gas stream (21) to produce a conditioned exhaust gas (22). An exhaust gas oxygen (EGO) sensor (18) is in communication with the conditioned exhaust gas (22) and generates a signal in response to the sensed oxygen concentration of the conditioned exhaust gas (22). The A/F mixture entering engine (10) is adjusted by closed loop control means (14) in response to the signal generated by EGO sensor (18). The removal of hydrogen from the exhaust gas stream (21) eliminates lean shifts and allows oxygen sensor (18) and closed loop control means (14) to more accurately control the A/F ratio. As a result of improved control over the A/F mixture entering engine (10), main three-way catalyst (20) optimally converts noxious components present in the conditioned exhaust gas (22) to produce a purified exhaust stream (23).

The filter trap comprises a filter material (12) having embedded in it particles of a catalyst and disposed within the exhaust manifold (10) of the diesel engine immediately downstream of the exhaust ports. 摘要： In order to deposit metal onto a surface such as a cylindrical surface, an arc spraying method is used with a consumable electrode (16), a non-consumable electrode (18) and a jet of atomising gas (22) blown through the arc (20) in a radial direction to propel the molten metal of the consumable electrode from the arc to the cylinder wall (12). The non-consumable electrode and the atomising gas jet both rotate about the cylinder axis so that the entire surface can be covered. The supply for the consumable electrode will normally come from a reel which can be stationary such that the consumable electrode does not rotate about its own axis.

摘要： A method is described for reducing the total emissions during cold starts from an engine burning a hydrocarbon fuel and having an afterburner arranged upstream of a catalytic converter. The method comprises the steps of: (i) adding an excess of fuel to the engine combustible charge and adding air to the engine exhaust gases immediately after the engine has first fired to assure the presence in the exhaust/air mixture of sufficient concentrations of hydrogen and oxygen to permit the resulting exhaust/air mixture to be ignitiable and to burn with a steady flame in the afterburner while the latter is at a temperature close to the ambient temperature, and (ii) igniting the exhaust/air mixture in the afterburner immediately after the engine has first fired. In the preferred embodiment of the invention, the excess fuel and/or the additional air are regulated after ignition has occurred in the afterburner to maintain a steady flame in the afterburner until at least part of the matrix of the catalytic converter has reached its light off temperature.
