    • A device for field weakening in a doubly-salient variable reluctance motor having permanent magnets (22, 24) in the stator (10). The field weakening increases the constant power range of the motor and is accomplished by controlled movement of steel insets (16, 36) toward and away from the sides of the stator (10) proximate the permanent magnets (22, 24) to provide a controllable by-pass flux path thereabout. Alternatively, the field weakening may be accomplished by a flux by-pass collar (40) which may be angularly positioned around the stator (10) to bridge the permanent magnets (22, 24) of the motor with discrete magnetic sections, thereby providing an alternate by-pass flux path around the permanent magnets (22, 24) in addition to the main air gap flux path. A third alternative means for maintaining a constant power range is accomplished by controlled axial sliding of the permanent magnets (22, 24) themselves into and out from the stator (10).

    • An economical reluctance drive/generator system including a double AC-fed reluctance motor (2) having two three-phase stator windings (p1 and p2) and a rotor (20) with simple salient poles. The speed of the motor (2) may be varied by alternating the frequency of the excitation voltage applied to one set of the stator windings while keeping the frequency of the excitation voltage applied to the other set of windings constant. The system also includes a frequency converter (30) for altering the frequency of the excitation voltage applied to one set of the stator windings. The system is accomplished with a set of structural constraints, and these insure the proper electromagnetic coupling between the two sets of stator windings and therefore insure the torque production and economical energy conversion in the system. The VA rating of the frequency converter (30) for this system can be reduced if the speed range is small and the rotor copper loss is eliminated in this motor or generator (2).
