    • A first belt tensioner includes an arm (14, 112, 212), spring case (16, 114, 214), coil spring (12, 116, 216), and arm plate (118, 218). The arm (14, 112, 212) is adapted to support an idler pulley (20, 120, 220) and has a hook portion (22, 122, 222). The spring case (16, 114, 214) is disposed in the arm (14, 112, 212) and has a first spring seat (124). The spring (12, 116, 216) is disposed in the spring case (16, 114, 214). The arm plate (118, 218) has a second spring seat (132, 232). The spring (12, 116, 216) is longitudinally compressed between the arm plate (118, 218) and the spring case (16, 114, 214). The spring (12, 116, 216) is in torsion, with the end portions (18; 128, 130; 230) of the spring (12, 116, 216) seated against a corresponding spring seat (124, 132) and with the arm plate (118, 218) rotationally positioned under the hook portion (22, 122, 222). A method for assembling the first belt tensioner (110, 210) includes using the arm plate (118, 218) to longitudinally compress the spring (116, 216) and rotating the arm plate (118, 218).     • A belt tensioner system includes a belt tensioner (112, 212) and a bumper idler pulley (114, 214). The belt tensioner includes an arm (116, 216) which is adapted to be rotatably-biased, and includes a tensioner idler pulley (118, 218) which is supported by the arm (116, 216) and which travels in an arcuate path when the arm rotates. The bumper idler pulley (114, 214) is positioned at least partially in the arcuate path to stop the travel of the tensioner idler pulley (118, 218) when the arm (116, 216) rotates to a predetermined rotational position. In one application, the belt tensioner system is for an automotive vehicle (126, 226).

    • A new asymmetrically damped tensioner (10) is provided utilizing a one-way clutch (4) connected to a tensioner arm (1) through a frictional damper (7). The frictional damper (7) is in frictional contact with the arm (1) and the one-way clutch (4) is coupled to the frictional damper (7) for movement therewith. The tensioner arm (1) is pivotable in a first direction to take up belt slack and a second direction. The clutch (4) is pivotable in the first direction but not the second direction. Because the one-way clutch (4) is operatively engaged with the arm (1) through the frictional damper (7), the tensioner (10) is able to respond to high belt tension once the frictional force between the arm (1) and the damper (7) is overcome.

    • A new tensioner is disclosed that achieves asymmetric damping in part by using a moveable ramp plate. The moveable ramp plate (3) is in frictional contact with the arm (1) and provides asymmetric frictional damping for the tensioner arm (1) when the arm experiences wind-up and begins to move away from the belt. The ramp plate (3) is rotatably associated with the movement of the tensioner arm (1) through a spring (2). The tensioner arm (1) may pivot in two directions. As the tensioner arm (1) pivots in a direction toward the belt the ramp plate (3) is urged such that friction between the ramp plate (3) and tensioner are minimized. When the tensioner arm (1) pivots in the opposite direction, as potentially typified by wind-up, the ramp plate (3) is urged such that friction between the ramp plate (3) and tensioner is increased, thereby minimizing wind-up of the tensioner arm (1).

    • A new asymmetrically damped tensioner is provided utilizing a bearing-ramp clutch (7). During normal operation, the bearing-ramp clutch (7) enables the tensioner arm (1) to pivot in a first direction (A) to take up belt slack with negligible frictional damping applied to the motion of the tensioner arm (1). When the tensioner arm (1) pivots in a second direction (B), away from the belt, however, in a condition commonly known as wind-up, the bearing-ramp clutch (7) locks against a fixed internal surface and creates a frictional damping force that is applied to the tensioner arm (1). This frictional linkage provides asymmetric frictional damping to the tensioner (21) to limit movement in the second direction (B) to mitigate wind-up.
