摘要： A channeled substrate for forming integrated optical devices that employ optical fibers and at least one active optical component is disclosed. The channeled substrate includes a substrate member having an upper surface one or more grooves formed therein, and a transparent sheet. The transparent sheet, which is preferably made of thin glass, is fixed to the substrate member upper surface to define, in combination with the one or more grooves, one or more channels. The channels are each sized to accommodate an optical fiber to allow for optical communication through the transparent sheet between the active optical component and the optical fibers. Channeled substrates formed by molding and by drawing are also presented. Integrated optical devices that employ the channeled substrate are also disclosed.

摘要： Glass-based micropositioning systems and methods are disclosed. The micropositioning systems and methods utilize microbumps (40) formed in a glass substrate (12 or 100). The microbumps are formed by subjecting a portion of the glass substrate to localized heating, which results in local rapid expansion of glass where the heat was applied. The height and shape of the microbumps depend on the type of glass substrate and the amount and form of heat delivered to the substrate. The microbumps allow for active or passive micropositioning of optical elements, including planar waveguides and optical fibers. Optical assemblies formed using microbump micropositioners are also disclosed.

摘要： Integrated silicon photonic active optical cable assemblies (ACOAs), as well as sub- assemblies and components for AOCAs, are disclosed. One component is a multifiber ferrule configured to support multiple optical fibers in a planar array. The multifiber ferrule is combined with a flat top to form a ferrule sub-assembly. Embodiments of a unitary fiber guide member that combines the features of the multifiber ferrule and the flat top is also disclosed. The ferrule sub-assembly or the fiber guide member is combined with a photonic light circuit (PLC) silicon substrate with transmitter and receiver units to form a PLC assembly. The PLC assembly is combined with a printed circuit board and an electrical connector to form an ACOA. An extendable cable assembly that utilizes at least one ACOA is also described.

The cells are separated by cell walls, and the body has at least one fluid path defined within a plurality of said cells. The fluid path includes one or more apertures, through respective cell walls between cells of one or more respective pairs of said plurality of cells. Each aperture has an aperture width measured perpendicular to the common direction of 90% or less of a cell wall width of the respective cell wall measured perpendicular to the common direction. Optionally one or more of the plurality of cells has at least two cell walls each having an aperture at the same position in the common direction. As a further option, these apertures may be offset from the respective centers of their respective walls in the same rotational direction about a central axis of the cell.

摘要： Components having one or more sensors adapted to provide sensor data relating to a condition(s) of the component are disclosed. The component is adapted to communicate with another mating component to associate sensor data with identity information of the mating component. The sensor and identity information can be communicated remotely including via radio-frequency communications employing RF identification devices (RFIDs). 摘要： Microfluidic devices having wall structures comprised of sintered glass frit and further including a glass, glass-ceramic or ceramic membrane structure sealed by a sintered seal to said wall structures, such that a a fluid passage or chamber is defined at least in part by the wall structures and said membrane structure. This allows for changes in pressure within the fluid passage or chamber to cause deflections of the membrane structure, providing for direct measurement of pressure within the device. The microfluidic device may have both floors and walls of sintered frit, or may have only walls of sintered frit, with planar floor-like substrate structures, thicker than the membrane structure defining the vertical boundaries of the internal passages. The device may include multiple fluid passages or chambers each defined at least in part by a membrane structure. Multiple membrane structures may be used in a single device, and one single membrane structure may be used for multiple passages or chamber.
