    • In this invention, when images are to be accumulated by using a hierarchical coding technique using discrete wavelet transformation like JPEG2000, image data and edge histograms are efficiently accumulated by generating the edge histograms using intermediate data. Image data to be registered in an image retrieval apparatus is input by an image input unit. The image data is divided into one or more tiles by a tiling unit. A discrete wavelet transformation unit performs discrete wavelet transformation of each tile. The resultant data is accumulated as an encoded image data stream in an accumulating unit through a coefficient quantizing unit and an entropy coding unit. The discrete wavelet transformation results are supplied to an edge histogram generating unit, in which edge histograms are generated. The edge histograms are accumulated in the accumulating unit in association with the encoded image data.
