    • We describe a methods of controlling the drive to a BJT or IGBT transistor to control the saturation of said transistor to achieve fast turn-off. An embodiment of the method comprises determining a quantity of charge in the transistor for a combination of collector current and a time for which said collector current flows, and delivering a pulse of current or voltage to a control terminal of said BJT or IGBT transistor such that a total quantity of charge delivered to a base of said BJT or to an internal base of said IGBT in said pulse of base or gate current or voltage is sufficient to maintain said collector current for said time and to sustain said transistor in saturation or quasi - saturation up to or after the end of said base current or gate voltage pulse until the end of said time.

    • We describe systems for forward power converters, in particular a bi - level current sense circuit to enable a single current sense input to provide two different current sense levels. The circuit comprises: a single current sense input connected to a current sense r esistor via a second resistor, for coupling in series with a power switch to generate a current sense signal for current through the switch; first and second comparators sharing a connection to the current sense input and having respective first and second outputs coupled to a controller, these being configured to compare a voltage on said shared input connection against different respective first and second threshold values; and a current generator coupled to said shared input connection. This enables third and fourth bi - level current sense threshold values to be set independently by said current sense and second resistors without changing said first and second threshold values.

    • This invention relates to method s and apparatus for regulating the output voltage and/or current of switch mode power converter, in particular forward converters. A method of regulating the output voltage of a forward switch mode power converter, said power converter having a power input, a power output to provide said output voltage, a transformer with matched polarity primary and secondary windings coupled between said power input and said power output; and a switch to cyclically switch power from said power input on and off to said primary winding of said transformer to transfer power to said power output and a secondary side rectifier; the method comprising: sensing a voltage on said primary winding or on an auxiliary winding of said transformer during a period when said switch is of f and said secondary side rectifier is conducting; and controlling a proportion of time for which said switch is on, responsive to said sensing, to control said output voltage.
