    • Continuous extrusion apparatus particularly for the production of copper tube extrudate from continuous copper rod feedstock. A relatively small diameter coining roll (8) is continuously adjustably mounted to project into a circumferential groove (4) on a rotatable wheel (2) to apply a radial force of up to ten tonnes on the feedstock (32) to achieve uniform cohesion of the feedstock with the circumferential groove (4) prior to extrusion. The coining roll (8) is freely rotatably mounted on a stirrup (11) carried on a stirrup block (12) slidably mounted in a fixed support frame (14). Rotation through a restricted angle of an eccentrically mounted shaft (30) coacting with a housing (18) moves the coining roll (8) into or out of the circumferential groove (4). The shaft (30) is rotated by a motor (not shown) activated in accord with signals indicative of variance from a pre-determ fined requisite application of radial force to the feedstock (32) derived from the position of the coining roll (8), the temperature of the rotatable wheel (2) or/and the force applied at the coining roll (8).

    • Apparatus (2) for continuous extrusion of an aluminium sheathing (22) on to a core cable (8) includes a rotatable wheel formed with two identical circumferential grooves outwardly bounded by arcuate tooling discharging through radial exit apertures to an extrusion chamber positioned around a portal mandrel. A powered pay-off reel (10) is arranged continuously to supply the core cable (8) through the mandrel whilst the aluminium sheathing (22) is extruded as a loose fit from the extrusion chamber around the core cable (8). The extruded cable (22) is discharged through cooling means (24) to a roller cormgator (26) including a rotating frame mounted on a carriage (27) freely moveable axially of the cable (22) and provided with a rotational drive having a roller arranged to form a continuous helical indentation in the sheathing (22). Pneumatic actuating cylinders (32) are positioned on the carriage (27) to provide a constant, low magnitude, tension on the portion of the sheath (22) intermediate the extrusion chamber and the roller corrugator (26) and limit forces tending to distort the uncooled sheath. A pair of opposed grooved rollers (34) are provided upstream of the roller corrugator (26) to restrict transmission upstream of any torsional forces arising from the roller corrugator. The rotational speed of the rotating frame of the roller corrugator (26) is regulated in accordance with the linear speed of the cable (22) to effect transport of the cable without causing unacceptable stretching of the sheath.

    • A die heater body assembly (11) for continuous extrusion apparatus substantially similar to the apparatus described in EP-A-0071 490 includes a die block (15) of non-magnetic material for the extrusion of copper tube and a bucket portion (17) forming a sliding fit in a die heater body (19). The die heater body (19) includes a coil of copper tubing in a ceramic support material provided with electric power and cooling water connections (23) to heat the bucket portion (17) by electrical induction to a temperature of approximately 700 ° Celsius. Individual paths between the discharge ports (27) and the annular extrusion gap (44) are substantially equal in length as measured on the respective surfaces of the rear faces, edge portions and front faces of the profiled lobes (32). An extruded aluminium cylindrical tube of up to 150mm diameter and wall thickness in the range from lmm to 4mm may be formed avoiding discontinuities.
