    • Apparatus (2) for continuous extrusion of an aluminium sheathing (22) on to a core cable (8) includes a rotatable wheel formed with two identical circumferential grooves outwardly bounded by arcuate tooling discharging through radial exit apertures to an extrusion chamber positioned around a portal mandrel. A powered pay-off reel (10) is arranged continuously to supply the core cable (8) through the mandrel whilst the aluminium sheathing (22) is extruded as a loose fit from the extrusion chamber around the core cable (8). The extruded cable (22) is discharged through cooling means (24) to a roller cormgator (26) including a rotating frame mounted on a carriage (27) freely moveable axially of the cable (22) and provided with a rotational drive having a roller arranged to form a continuous helical indentation in the sheathing (22). Pneumatic actuating cylinders (32) are positioned on the carriage (27) to provide a constant, low magnitude, tension on the portion of the sheath (22) intermediate the extrusion chamber and the roller corrugator (26) and limit forces tending to distort the uncooled sheath. A pair of opposed grooved rollers (34) are provided upstream of the roller corrugator (26) to restrict transmission upstream of any torsional forces arising from the roller corrugator. The rotational speed of the rotating frame of the roller corrugator (26) is regulated in accordance with the linear speed of the cable (22) to effect transport of the cable without causing unacceptable stretching of the sheath.

    • Multiple upset, cold pressure, welding apparatus, incorporating an electrically driven actuation means includes a welding die set (2) having two pairs of die halves each formed with a groove providing a bore in a closed position for gripping end portions of first and second workpieces (32) and also being reciprocable to apply a welding pressure across abutting faces of the workpieces. In operation, end portions of the wire workpiece (32) are positioned in the welding die set (2) and the electric motor (18A) energised to rotate the cam (48A) thereby effecting oscillation of the lever arms (10, 12) and reciprocation of the blocks (4) to effect a multiple upset weld in the workpiece (32) following a pre-determined series of cycles.     • The machine is provided with a set of two pairs of die halves (60, 62) mounted in a framework on hydraulically actuated piston and cylinder assemblies. The die halves (60 and 62) of each pair are relatively radially reciprocable to grip or release a workpiece (102, 104) and the two pairs of die halves are relatively axially reciprocable to effect cold pressure welding together of end portions of the workpieces (102, 104). Adjoining end faces of the die halves are formed with nose portions (100) having inner anvil edges for effecting welding flash removal from the workpieces. In operation, the die halves are moved in sequence to grip the workpieces; to urge the ends of the workpieces together to form a cold pressure weld upset zone; to release the workpieces; to grip one of the workpieces; to urge the gripped workpiece axially relative to a pair of anvil edges to clear flash material from the upset to maintain the cross-sectional area at the weld upset zone substantially constant; and to re-position the upset weld zone centrally of the nose portions to repeat the sequence. Removal of the flash material intermediate consecutive weld upsets is effected in alternate directions. The anvil edges may be staggered, angled or of helical form to enhance the shearing effect to clear the flash material from the upset weld zone.

    • A die top assembly engaging with a rotating wheel (not shown) of a continuous extrusion apparatus includes a die top (22) formed with a part cylindrical face (34) co-acting with the wheel cylindrical surface and is positioned in a shoe (8) held in contact with the wheel. Ports (28) registering with circumferential grooves in the rotating wheel extend from the part cylindrical face (34) to a semi-toroidal channel (44) and extrudate supply chamber (46) extending around a central boss (80). A central mandrel die piece (72) is secured in position by means of a bolt (76) threaded into a blind bore (78) in the boss (80) and co-acts with a cylindrical die (56) to form an extrusion orifice (86). By securing the die piece (72) by means of the bolt (76) threaded into the blind bore (78), the dimension radially of the die top (22) may be reduced to a minimum by virtue of avoidance of weakening penetrations other than the ports (28) in the portion of the die top (22) adjoining the rotating wheel. This has the benefit that the axial extent of the ports (28) may be reduced to a minimum, thereby reducing to a minimum the frictional losses imposed on feed material extruded through the ports, an important consideration particularly when extruding copper. A range of cylindrical dies (56) and central mandrel die pieces (72) may be utilised without having to use a different die top, thereby increasing the versatility of the apparatus without incurring large additional expenditure for a complete set of tooling.

    • Continuous extrusion apparatus having a rotating circumferential groove (72) carrying feedstock to a passageway formed between the groove and arcuate tooling extending into the groove has the groove formed on the central region (72) of a cylinder (2). The cylinder (2) is formed with end bosses (16, 18) which are supported in bearings (4) such that deflection arising from generating very high extrusion pressures in the passageway is minimised and stresses are distributed to the bearings (4) in a manner avoiding concentrations or the incidence of unacceptably high variations in local stress levels. The cylinder (2) is end connected to a drive shaft (24) outboard of the bearing (4) with a splined end portion (22) of the drive shaft locating in an end recess (20) in the cylinder (2). Alternatively a bolted connection may be used. A tie bolt (36) extends coaxially of the cylinder (2) and serves to apply a compressive axial loading to the cylinder to counter tension stresses arising during extrusion. The bearings (4) include rollers (48) directly in contact with the end bosses (16, 18) of the cylinder, the cylinder being free to expand axially relative to one set of rollers (48). Cooling and lubricating fluid is supplied to the bearings (4) and end bosses (16, 18). Coolant may also be directed through passages lined with copper sleeves extending axially of the cylinder (2). The bearing surfaces on the bosses (16, 18) and the central region (70) of the cylinder (2) are formed as regions of increased hardness relative to the remainder of the cylinder.
