    • A hyperthermia apparatus having a three-dimensional target positioning capability is disclosed. The apparatus includes a signal modifier (16), having electromagnetic power splitting, phase adjusting, and power gain capabilities, connected to a plurality of power connector assemblies (18) having individual antenna power and power phase adjusting capability. The power connector assemblies (18) connect power at preselected phases to a plurality of antenna groups (27) forming an applicator. Each antenna group (32) includes three antennae (34) preferably of the dipole type stacked end to end on a tube of dielectric material (54). The phase of the power applied to the three antennae (34) of the antenna groups (32) is selected to provide a target heating spot positionable or adjustable in size in a body portion in a direction along the long axis of the body portion and within the cross section perpendicular to the long axis. This adjustable size and positioning of the target along the long axis provides an additional dimension to the capability of moving the target perpendicular to the long axis in either direction from the center as provided in known applicators.

    • A urethral inserted applicator for prostate electromagnetic hyperthermia includes apparatus for holding and positioning at least one electromagnetic energy applicator (14) in a urethral passage extending through a prostate gland. A comparator (42) is connected to the temperature sensor (25) and a temperature reference potentiometer (44) for comparing the actual tissue temperature with a desired temperature and for providing output control signals to the electromagnetic generator (12) for controlling the output of the generator to the applicators (14).

    • Hyperthermia apparatus includes a hyperthermia treatment subsystem (12), and a receiver subsystem (16). The subsystems include, respectively, a power source (30) and radiometer (33) connected to a switch (31) controlled by a central processing unit (CPU) (20) to selectively connect either the power source and the radiometer to complete the subsystems as follows. A power divider (32) having output ports for feeding electromagnetic energy through a plurality of applicator circuits each circuit including a phase shifter (34) connected to the power divider, a power regulating switch (37) connected to the phase shifter, and an applicator (36) connected to the power control switches. The power regulating switches are controlled also by the CPU. Thus, when the CPU connects the power source to the power divider the hyperthermia subsystem is complete for operation in the tissue heating mode; however, when the CPU connects the radiometer, the receiver subsystem is complete. A second embodiment includes a separate radiometer connected to each antenna port.
