    • A method is described for labeling containers (22, 30 and 44) with a label (12, 32 and 40) that facilitates a de-labeling process. During the labeling process, a frangible region (34 and 42) is formed on the label (12, 32 and 40) which is then applied to containers (22, 30 and 44). After consumer use, the labeled containers (22, 30 and 44) are collected for de-labeling. In the de-labeling process, a mechanical force is applied to the frangible region (34 and 42) which causes the label (12, 32 and 40) to flag outwardly from the container (22, 30 and 44). A separating device then removes the label (12, 32 and 40) from the container (22, 30 and 44). The de-labeled container (22, 30 and 44) may then be cleaned for reuse and provided with a fresh label.

    • A machine and method for handling a plurality of articles (8), and a feed apparatus for transporting the article (8) between a first station (14) and a second station (16). The machine generally includes a conveyor (18) which supplies a stream of articles (8) to an infeed station (14) and a feed apparatus (12) for indexing the articles (8). The feed apparatus (12) includes at least one pocket (39) shaped to at least partially receive one of the articles (8) for transporting the article (8) from the first station (14) to the second station (16) and a guide section (40) configured to separate the first one of the articles (8a) from the second one of the articles (8b) for movement of the first one of the articles into the pocket (39), to control movement of the second one of the articles (8b) during separation of the first one of the articles (8a) from the second one of the articles (8b), and to move the second one of the articles (8b) into the pocket (39) upon further rotation of the feed apparatus (12). The method includes the steps of moving a plurality of articles (8) to the first station (14) in a substantially continuous stream and rotating the feed wheel (12) to separate adjacent articles (8) and individually move the articles (8) from the infeed station (14) to the exit station (16).

    • A machine for applying labels (28) or other segments of sheet material to containers (10) or other articles having cylindrical bodies and which have a geometric feature above or below the cylindrical body, for example, a handle (15) which can be grasped. An article transport mechanism (18) is provided to transport each article (10) to a wrapping mechanism and during such transport to spin each article (10) about its cylindrical axis. A latch device (45) is provided which is biased to a latching position. As each article (10) enters the transport mechanism (18), it is caused to spin about its cylinder axis at least one revolution or until it is restrained from further spinning. When each article is spun to a predetermined position with respect to the geometric feature the latch device (45) grasps such feature and holds the article (10) in such position. Cam structure (60) is employed to release the latch device (45) as the article (10) enters the wrapping mechanisms.

    • A computer controlled turret type labeling apparatus having a label applying mechanism for applying labels to containers. The labeling apparatus has a turret having a motor for driving the turret and a sensor for providing turret status information to a controlling computer. The turret apparatus contains at least one labeling station. Each labeling station also has a motor and a sensor, the motor drives the labeling station and the sensor provides labeling station status information to the controlling computer. The computer is programmed to process status information in conjunction with prestored information relating to the characteristics of the labeling apparatus, containers, and desired labeling and generate suitable control signals for labeling apparatus operation. The computer is coupled to the turret motor and sensor and to each labeling station motor and sensor for processing status information received from the turret sensor and each labeling station sensor, and generating control signals to drive the turret motor and each labeling station motor, based on the received, processed information, to effect labeling of containers.
