    • Disclosed herein is a process for producing a selected butane, comprising obtaining a C4 feed stream comprising C4 paraffins and C4 olefins, splitting the C4 feed stream to form a first stream comprising a first butane and a second stream comprising a second butane, isomerizing at least a part of the second stream to convert a portion of the second butane to the first butane, and recycling at least some of the isomerized part of the second steam to the splitting step, wherein a portion of at least one of the C4 feed stream and the second stream is passed through a facilitated transport membrane to remove butanes, forming at least one purge stream comprising butanes. A process for the conversion of C4 olefins, comprising obtaining a C4 feed stream comprising C4 paraffins and C4 olefins, including 1 -butane and 2-butene, and reacting the C4 feed stream in a metathesis reactor to form a second stream is also disclosed. The second stream is fractionated to form one or more product streams and a recycle stream primarily containing C4 olefins and C4 paraffins. The recycle stream and/or the C4 feed stream is passed through a facilitated transport membrane to remove butanes, forming at least one purge stream.

    • A process is disclosed for the preferential conversion to 2-butene of a stream containing C4 compounds including 1-butene and 2-butene. The process involves mixing the C4 stream with a first hydrogen stream to form a feed stream, hydroisomerizing the feed stream in the presence of a first hydroisomerization catalyst in order to convert at least a portion of the 1-butene to 2-butene, thereby producing a hydroisomerization effluent, passing the hydroisomerization effluent through a fractionation column to form a top stream comprising isobutane and isobutylene and a bottoms stream comprising 2-butene, withdrawing a recycle stream from said fractionation column at a location above the feed point at which the weight ratio of 1-butene to 2-butene is high, and combining the recycle stream with at least one of the C4 stream and the feed stream upstream from the hydroisomerization catalyst. A corresponding apparatus also is disclosed.

    • A C 3 to C 6 hydrogen cut from a cracking unit is processed for the conversion of olefins to propylene and hexene via autometathesis. The autometathesis of a mixed normal butenes feed in the presence of a metathesis catalyst operates without any ethylene in the feed mix to the metathesis reactor. Some fraction of the 2-butene feed may be isomerized to 1-butene and the 1-butene formed plus the 1-butene in the feed react rapidly with the 2-butene to form propylene and 2-pentene. The feed to the reactor also includes the recycle of the 2-pentene formed in the reactor with unreacted butenes to simultaneously form additional propylene and hexene. In one embodiment, some or all of the 3-hexene formed in the reaction is isomerized to 1-hexene. In another embodiment, some portion of the 3-hexene produced in the main metathesis reaction is reacted with ethylene to produce 1-butene without the need for superfractionation. In another embodiment, the 3-hexene product is hydrogenated and recycled back to the cracking heaters.
