摘要： An optical device includes a light source, an optical microresonator that supports at least a first optical guided mode propagating along a first direction and at least a second optical guided mode propagating along a second direction different from the first direction, and a detector. At least the first optical guided mode is excited by the emitted broadband light without the second optical guided mode being excited by the emitted broadband light. In some embodiments The detector receives and wavelength-averages light from the at least a second optical guided mode of the optical microresonator. In some embodiments, at least one of the light source, the microresonator and the detector is tunable.

摘要： A method for compensating for polarization mode dispersion of an incoming optical communications signal including the step of orienting the state of polarization of the incoming optical communications signal with respect to the axes of a polarization splitter. The communications signal is split into a first and a second orthogonal states of polarization at a split point. The first of the polarization states is directed to a first birefringent optical waveguide having a first chirped grating having a first reference reflection point. The second of the polarization states is directed to a second birefringent optical waveguide having a second chirped grating having a chirp pattern substantially similar to that of the first chirped grating and having a second reference reflection point. The optical path length from the second reflection point to the split point is adjustably varied to compensate for polarization dispersion between the first and second states of polarization. The first and second polarization states are then recombined into an output signal.

摘要： An adaptive polarization mode dispersion compensator (102) including a polarization controller (110) and a differential polarization delay unit (130). The polarization controller converts incoming light (112) of an arbitrary polarization to a controller output signal having a desired state of polarization. The differential polarization delay unit is optically coupled to receive the controller output signal from the polarization controller. The differential polarization delay unit includes a polarization beam splitter element (125) and a first (132) and a second (132) birefringent optical waveguide. First (134) and second (138) chirped gratings are formed in the first and second birefringent optical waveguides. At least one tuning mechanism (180) is coupled to at least one of the gratings, wherein the tuning mechanism variably adjusts one of the reference reflection points (139) with respect to the other reference reflection point (135). A combiner element (125) recombines the two reflected orthogonal polarization signals into a delay line output (120). A signal quality analyzer (160) evaluates the quality of the differential polarization delay unit output signal and provides a control signal (164,166) to the polarization controller and the differential polarization delay unit.
