    • A display device (10) is constructed such that a front face support plate (31) and back face support plates (321, 322, ..., 328) hold gas discharge tubes (11R, 11G, 11B, ...), that is, the device has the plurality of back face support plates for the one front face support plate (31). Further, the display device has a display electrodes (2) and signal electrodes (3). The display electrodes (2) are arranged on that surface of the support plate which faces the gas discharge tubes, and the display electrodes (2) are formed in the direction crossing the axes of the gas discharge tubes. The signal electrodes (3) are arranged on those surfaces of the back face support plates which face the gas discharge tubes, and the signal electrodes (3) are formed in the longitudinal direction of the gas discharge tubes. Also, another back face support plate (330) for supporting the back face support plates is provided on those faces of the back face support plates which are on the opposite side of the gas discharge tubes.

    • In a color display (10), a plurality of gas discharge tubes are arranged in parallel. In the gas discharge tubes, phosphor layers (4R, 4G, 4B) composed of different materials depending on the colors are arranged, a discharge gas is encapsulated and a plurality of emission points are provided in the longitudinal direction. A plurality of display electrodes are arranged on the display surface sides of the gas discharge tubes, and a plurality of signal electrodes (3) are arranged on the back sides of the gas discharge tubes. Voltage control layers (6R, 6G, 6B) are formed between the phosphor layers and the signal electrodes. The voltage control layer is composed of a material for varying the discharge start voltage between the display electrode and the signal electrode and the material is selected such that the difference of discharge start voltage among the plurality of gas discharge tubes decreases depending on the material of the phosphor layer.
