    • A needle assembly (10) has a hollow tubular housing (12) and a needle sub assembly (14) including a needle (18) slideably mounted therein. Two diametrically opposed legs (30) extend radially outwards and backwards from the needle shaft (16) and engage the rear end (42) of the housing (12) surrounding an aperture (74) through which the rear of the shaft (16) extends. The legs hold the subassembly (14) in an extended state against the action of a spring (52). Two diametrically opposed arms (70) overlie the legs (30) when the needle sub assembly (14) is extended and which may be squeezed together to compress the legs (30) inwards and allow the legs (30) to pass through the aperture (74) under the action of the spring (52) allowing the needle subassembly (14) to retract and draw the point (26) of the needle (18) into the housing (12).

    • A device (10) for stripping fluid from a tube (40) is provided that is of use in stripping blood from bloodlines after the collection of blood from donors. The device is preferably hand-held and battery-powered, having a fixed driven roller (18), a moveable idle roller (20) and a tube guide (22) extending cantilever-fashion from one end thereof. The idle roller (20) can be moved toward the fixed and driven roller (18) to form a nip therebetween which pinches the tube (40) and draws it through the nip when the driven roller (18) is rotated. Idle roller (20) is moveable in a slot (50) and in direction which is never coplanar with the plane (Y) that contains the axes of the rollers (18 & 20). The angle 0 between the direction of movement of the idle roller (20) and the plane (Y) containing the axes of the rollers when the nip is formed can vary between about 30 and 90 degrees.

    • A system and method for protecting computer systems from computer viruses. The system (301) generally consists of a protection device (17) interposed between the computer and the hard disk drive (15, 307). The protection device (17) is connected between the disk controller (13, 303) and the disk drive (15, 307) to intercept relevant control signals issued by the controller (13, 303) to the disk drive (15, 307) and selectively override the signals in accordance with a prescribed protection scheme to protect unauthorised reading or writing of predefined protected areas of the disk drive (15, 307). The protection device (17) can also be connected to the main communication bus (305) of the computer to enable the CPU of the computer to drive the initialisation means to configure the protection scheme for the disk. Alternatively, the initialisation means may be implemented in software stored within a protected area of the disk, which software is run early in the power up sequence of the computer system performed from a cold boot. In either case, the initialisation means is operated early in the power up sequence before the disk operating system stored on the disk (15, 307) is loaded into the main memory of the computer to effect normal operation of the computer system.
