    • A process (10) for providing water with a lowered salinity and which produces at least one recoverable waste stream containing a useful by-product, includes treating raw water (12) which has an undesirably high concentration of cations, including Ca 2+ and Na + , in a cation exchange stage (14). The cation exchange stage 14 includes at least first and second cation exchangers (18, 20). The first cation exchanger (18) has a selectivity towards di-valent cations and the second cation exchanger (20) is downstream of the first cation exchanger (18). From time to time, the first cation exchanger (18) is regenerated with an acid to produce a first recoverable waste stream (50) which includes a calcium salt, and from time to time, Na + is removed from the second cation exchanger (20) to produce a second recoverable waste stream (58) which includes a sodium compound.
