    • Methods for the treatment or prevention of diseases which are caused by the degradation of histone deacetylase 2 (HDAC2) in cells are described. The diseases which may be treated by the methods of the invention include chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and asthma. The invention provides methods for treating or preventing of diseases caused by the degradation of HDAC2 by providing to the subject in need of treatment or prevention a molecular compound capable of preventing the degradation of HDAC2. Such molecular compounds include protein kinase CK2 inhibitors, ubiquitination inhibitors, ubiquitin-proteosome inhibitors and MAPK phosphatase 1 activators. Methods are also provided for the treatment and prevention of diseases caused by the degredation of HDAC2 by interfering with the expression of protein kinase CK2. Methods are further provided for the treatment and prevention of COPD and asthma by providing to a subject in need of such treatment and prevention a nucleic acid which causes expression of HDAC2 in lung cells.

    • A system and method are provided for measuring the thickness of a tear film layer (208) and the heights of tear menisci (210, 212) around upper and lower eyelids of an eye. A plurality of images are acquired between consecutive blinks the eye using optical coherence tomography (OCT). The images depict the tear film layer (208) and tear menisci (210, 212) as distinct from the cornea of the eye. In an embodiment, a plurality of reflectivity profiles (602) from an OCT image are aligned and averaged. The difference between a first peak (608) and a second peak (610) of the average reflectivity profile is measured to determine the thickness of the tear film layer. The heights of the upper meniscus (210) and the lower meniscus (212) can also be measured from the same OCT image. In an embodiment, thickness measurements from the plurality of OCT images are combined. The measurements can be used to diagnose tear disorders, analyze treatments of dry eye and evaluate artificial tears.

    • A device for treating a fusiform aneurysm includes an elongate catheter and an expandable member detachably coupled with the elongate catheter at or near its distal end and adapted to assume a fusiform expanded shape. In its expanded shape the external surface of the expandable member will contact an inner wall of the aneurysm, thus preventing blood from passing between the external surface of the expandable member and the inner wall of the aneurysm. The expandable member includes an inflation lumen for expansion and a blood flow lumen to allow blood to flow from a portion of a blood vessel proximal to the aneurysm, through the blood flow lumen, to a portion of the blood vessel distal to the aneurysm. The expandable member is adapted to retain an expanded configuration and remain in place within the aneurysm when detached from the elongate catheter body.
