    • This invention relates generally to the field of light emitting diodes (LEDs). More particularly, this invention relates to organic light emitting diodes which employ an electron-injecting cathode comprising a thin layer of an oxide of a low work function metal. More specifically, the present invention relates to LEDs which comprise: (a) a hole-injecting anode layer; (b) an electron-injecting cathode layer; and, (c) an emissive layer; wherein (i) said emissive layer is interposed between said anode layer and said cathode layer; (ii) said emissive layer comprises an electroluminescent, semiconducting, organic material; (iii) said cathode layer comprises a layer of metal oxide having a thickness of from about 15 to about 200 Å and, (iv) said metal oxide is selected from the group consisting of alkali metal oxides, alkaline earth metal oxides, lanthamide metal oxides, and mixtures thereof.

    • Electrochemical light emitting devices are disclosed which include a composite material in contact with two electrodes. The composite material is an admixture of ionic species and an "immobile" semiconductor. The semiconductor is capable of supporting both (p- and n-type carriers and having a doping profile which can be dynamically changed in a controlled fashion through reversible electrochemical oxidation and reduction. Devices having this structure may be used to generate electrochemically induced p-n junctions, thereby providing a new means of exploiting the light emitting properties of such junctions under an applied voltage. Systems and methods for generating useful levels of light employing these devices are also disclosed.

    • An ohmic hole injecting electrode or contact (110, 112) for diode structures is disclosed. It is formed of multilayer composite materials (110, 112) and gives superior results in this application. The composite materials include a layer of a high work function inorganic material (112) and a layer of conductive polyaniline ("PANI") (110). In preferred embodiments (140), the anode has substantial transparency. These preferred materials can function as transparent electrodes in light-related diodes such as LEDs and photovoltaic cells where they exhibit lower turn on voltages and higher efficiencies.
