    • A process for separating docosahexaenoic acid or an ester thereof having a high purity in a high yield by separating a lipid containing docosahexaenoic acid from a marine microalga containing the lipid, and separating docosahexaenoic acid or an ester thereof from a fatty acid mixture obtained by hydrolyzing the lipid, fatty acid ester mixture obtained by esterifying the fatty acid with a lower alcohol or fatty acid ester mixture obtained by transesterifying the lipid, and purifying the obtained product, which comprises at least the steps of (1) dissolving the fatty acid or fatty acid ester mixture and urea in a solvent, (2) evaporating and distilling off the solvent, (3) extracting the product with a solvent in which urea is substantially insoluble and docosahexaenoic acid or its ester is soluble, and (4) evaporating and distilling off the extracting solvent.
