    • A configurable printer is provided which includes a first memory for storing multiple firmware application programs. Each of the firmware application programs enables respectively different printer functionalities A. switch mechanism such as a DIP switch, is provided that has multiple settings for selecting a respective firmware application program from the multiple firmware application programs in the first memory. The printer also includes a second memory for storing a boot program. A processor is provided for executing the boot program upon startup of the printer. During execution, the boot program reads a current setting of the switch mechanism and executes a selected firmware application program corresponding to the current setting, thereby providing the desired printed functionality.

    • The present invention provides methods and apparatus for creating customized messages for printing on a transaction slip. A user interface (10) is provided for creating a customized message for printing on the slip. At least one template for the message is provided. The template(s) corresponds to a layout of the transaction slip. A selection tool (18) is enables the selection of a graphic from a menu of graphics files and inputting the graphic, if selected, into a graphic section (22) of the at least one template. A header section (26) of the at least one template is adapted to accept header text input for a message header. A text section (28) of the at least one template is adapted to accept message text input for a message body. Each graphic file, header text and message text that has been input into respective sections of the at least one template are combined into a printable message.

    • Methods and apparatus for driving a printer are provided. Data indicative of cash information to be printed on a cash voucher is received at a first driver from a local controller. Data indicative of non-cash information to be printed on a coupon is received at a second driver from a media controller. Printer commands are then generated by a processor in a standard format for the printer in response to data received from the first and second drivers. The data indicative of non-cash information may be stored in and obtained from media storage associated with the media controller. The media controller may forward the data indicative of non-cash information to the second driver in response to a signal received from the local controller. Alternatively, the media controller may forward the data indicative of non-cash information to the second driver in response to a signal received from a central system controller.

    • A peripheral such as a printer is controlled to receive data from different data ports. A first port receives data formatted according to a first protocol. A second port receives data formatted according to a second protocol. A first processor is associated with the peripheral. A second processor is associated with the second port. A switch is adapted to receive (i) first data from the first port and (ii) second data from the second port after processing by the second processor. The switch is controlled in response to a command received via the second port to couple either the first data or second data to the first processor for use in controlling the peripheral. New firmware can be downloaded to the peripheral via the second port in response to the command. The command can be communicated to the first processor via a separate port at the first processor and a memory shared with the second processor.

    • Methods and apparatus for determining print progress of a document being printed are provided. The print progress of a document is monitored during printing by monitoring means included in the printer. The percentage of the printing which has been completed is then computed in real time based on information received from the monitoring means. The computed percentage may be used to determine the print completion status of each print field of a document having a plurality of print fields. The computed percentage may be reported to a host device associated with the printer. The computed percentage may be stored in non-volatile memory of the printer and/or of the host device so that the computed percentage of completed printing is maintained during a power failure. The computed percentage of printing completed can be recovered from non-volatile memory upon power recovery.

    • Systems and methods for providing customized coupons in a casino gaming environment are provided. A printer resident in a gaming machine is provided and has at least one communication port for communication external to the gaming machine. A coupon layout generator may also be provided for creating customized coupons. A server manager may be provided for distributing the customized coupons to one or more targeted recipients. A server port device may be provided for connecting the server manager to the communication port of the printer and for converting an Ethernet signal from the server manager to a serial signal recognizable by the printer. With such a system, an IP address may be assigned to the server port device. The IP address, together with player identification information, is used by the server manager to determine appropriate coupons for distribution to the gaming machine.

    • The present invention provides a USB peripheral device belonging to a model line of identical peripheral devices. The peripheral device includes a USB interface enabling connection of the peripheral device to a USB port of a host device. The peripheral device also includes a memory for storing a USB device identifier. The USB device identifier comprises a standard USB device identifier that is the same for all the peripheral devices of the model line. The standard USB device identifier identifies each peripheral device in the model line to the host device as identical devices, thereby preventing device driver reinstallation and communication port reassignment when swapping one peripheral device for another peripheral device from the same model line. This enables identical peripheral devices to be "hot-­swappable" such that they can be interchanged on the host device, even when the host device is powered up and running. Corresponding methods are also provided.
