    • The disclosure relates to a method of stabilising a recorded or projected image in an optical apparatus supported for damped movement in pan and tilt axes. The method comprises, for each axis, monitoring actual movement of the camera using a dynamic sensor; monitoring intended movement input by the operator across the damper using an opto-electronic transducer and determining at time intervals the difference between the actual and intended apparatus movement which represents unwanted movement and applying a correction to counter the unwanted movement. Movement due to-electronic drift in the dynamic sensor and opto-electronic transducers is determined from the residue of the aggregate of said differences between actual and intended movement over a period of time and is used to predict a value for electronic drift for the next difference between actual and intended movement which is taken into account in the difference.

    • A TV/video camera (12) is disclosed in which optical images are converted into electronic signals. A motorised mounting (10,14,15,16,17) moves the camera in pan and tilt axes and a remote control (18,19) for the motorised mounting provides input signals to the mounting to command movements of the camera in said axes. The camera/mounting has an electronic gyroscope (29) for determining actual movement of the camera/mounting in said axes to provide signals corresponding to actual movement of the camera, and the camera has a microprocessor (28) connected to the gyroscope (29) and remote control (18,19) to receive signals corresponding to intended and actual movements of the camera to determine the difference which corresponds to unwanted movement of the camera and to correct the image via an input (32) to the camera to eliminate the unwanted movement from the image.

    • The disclosure relates to a tiltable mounting for a payload such as a camera (10) comprising, a platform (22) to receive the camera, a support (20), means to mount the platform for tilting movement on the support about a horizontal axis to either side of a neutral position in which the platform is disposed above the horizontal axis. The platform is counterbalanced throughout its range of movement to either side of said neutral position, by a spring driven counterbalance means comprising a cam (27, 28) and cam follower (31) arranged for relative movement with tilting of the platform with respect to the support. The came follower is located on a pivotally mounted lever (32) and linear springs (40) and a connection (38, 42, 43, 44) to convert rotation of the lever into linear input to the spring means to generate a spring force to resist tilting of the mounting. The shaping of the cam (28) is such that the spring force generated in response to tilting of the platform counterbalances the platform/payload throughout a prescribed range of movement in either side of said neutral position.
