    • An optical recording material represented by formula (1) and an optical recording medium which has a recording layer containing the same and is excellent in recording sensitivity, light resistance, and durability. In said formula X1 to X4 each represents hydrogen, alkyl, aryl, alicyclic residue, aralkyl, heterocycle, alkoxy, aryloxy, alkylthio, or arylthio; Y1 to Y4 each represents hydrogen, halogeno, nitro, phthalimidomethyl, or sulfonamido; R1 and R2 each represents hydrogen, halogeno, hydroxy, alkyl, aryl, aralkyl, alkoxy, aryloxy, alkylthio, arylthio, alkylamino, dialkylamino, arylamino, or diarylamino; M represents Al, Ga, In, Si, Ge, or Sn; Z represents azo compound, anthraquinone compound, or metal complex compound; n1 to n4 each is 1 to 4; m1 to m4 each is 0 to 4; and k is 1 or 2 and 1 is 0 or 1, provided that (k+1) is 1 or 2.
