    • The invention discloses a method and apparatus for rupturing the amniotic membrane of a mother during labor. The device (2) comprises a tubular member (4) having a first end (6) that has a collar (32) and cutting members (38-42). The tubular member (4) also includes a piston (16) and rod member (18) for creating a negative pressure force. After rupturing the amniotic membrane (130), a standard fetal scalp electrode (110) can be inserted within the tubular member (4) and the fetal heart rate may be monitored. The method generally comprises inserting into the vagina of the mother the tubular member (4), contacting the amniotic membrane (130) with the first end (6) of an instrument used to perform two procedures with the tubular member (4), creating a negative pressure in the tubular member (4) by use of the piston (16) and rod member (18), which in turn causes the membrane (130) to contact the cutting members (38-42) so that the membrane (130) is ruptured, and the amniotic fluid (132) can be analyzed. Next, after removal of the piston (16) and the rod member (18), the fetal scalp electrode (110) can be inserted within the tubular member (4), which serves as a guide for the placement of the fetal scalp electrode (110), and the fetal heart rate monitored.
