    • A brake disc (1) for a vehicle which, when the brake disc is located on a hub end of a vehicle axle (11), places the friction portion (3) of the brake disc closer to the center of the axle than a rim of a vehicle wheel (12) mounted on the axle hub, such that the friction portion of the brake disc is outside of the wheel envelope. The friction surface of the brake disc located in this manner may have a greater radius (10) than the inner wheel radius (14), thereby permitting increased braking torque to be generated, and is exposed to the cooling environment outside the wheel rim envelope. Heat transfer from the friction portion to the hub end of the vehicle axle may be inhibited by ring-shaped reduced-thickness sections (15), which may also serve as flexible hinges that permit the brake disc to flex to accommodate asymmetric loading by a brake caliper.

    • When a disc brake (2) is mounted on an axle, particularly an air disc brake on the axle of a commercial vehicle, there is a possibility that an incompatible wheel may be installed. When such a wheel then rotates, interference between wheel and disc brake components may occur, such as a wheel valve stem (23) striking the brake caliper (6). Equipment damage and tire deflation may result. In order to preclude such brake-wheel interference, a disc brake shield device (3) is interposed between the disc brake and the wheel. When an incompatible wheel is installed over the shield device, the valve stem (23) is deflected away from the brake components. The shield device may further be provided with vanes (30) to circulate cooling air, and may include recesses to minimize valve stem deflection and cut-away portions to enhance brake inspection and maintenance, as long as contact with brake components continues to be precluded.

    • The present invention relates to a standard brake actuator service chamber of a generally conventional type having an enclosed housing, a flexible diaphragm peripherally secured within the housing, a relatively flat piston spring biased against the mid-portion of the diaphragm and a push rod connected to the piston and extending out of the service chamber housing. The service chamber of this invention, however, includes a push rod having a standard length preferably extending just out of the housing to reduce packaging costs but which accommodates the requirements of various brake mechanisms having different push rod length and stroke requirements. The yoke assembly includes a connector portion, a rod portion having a variable effective length and a yoke portion which is adapted to be attached to the brake mechanism. In some embodiments, the yoke member is selected from a plurality of yoke members having variable lengths. In another embodiment, the combined length of the yoke member and push rod assembly is adjustable. In the preferred embodiments, the first end of the push rod is permanently attached to the piston and in the most preferred embodiment, the push rod and piston are formed as an integral assembly, wherein the push rod is generally tubular or hollow and the second end, which extends out of the housing, is internally threaded to receive the connector portion of the push rod. Thus, the brake actuator service chamber of this invention may be manufactured and sold at a standard unit and utilized with one of a plurality of yoke assemblies having variable lengths or a yoke assembly having an adjustable length to accommodate the requirements of various brake mechanisms.
