    • The invention provides a noise suppresson phantom power optical microphone system having an optical microphone consisting of a light source having an input terminal, a membrane and a photodetector having an outpout terminal, the system including a signal amplifier connectable to the outpout terminal of the photodector; a processing amplifier connected to the output of the signal amplifier for providing high amplification to relatively weak input signals and low amplification to relatively strong input signals; a first circuit connecting the input terminal of the light source to a phantom power source; a second circuit connecting the outpout of the signal amplifier to the first circuit, and a third circuit connecting the output of the processing amplifier to the first circuit.

    • The invention provides a head for an optical microphone/sensor, including two spaced-apart, integrally interconnected, juxtaposed lightguides made of transparent, moldable material; a first of the lightguides including a light-admitting end, an intermediate section and a light-transmitting end having a light-transmitting face, and a second of the lightguides including a light-receiving end having a light-receiving face, an intermediate section and a light-outputting end; the edges of the light-transmitting end and light-receiving end being disposed in close proximity to, or at least indirectly contacting, each other so as to optimally transmit light towards a membrane and receive light reflected from the membrane.

    • The invention provides a microphone/sensor, inlcuding a housing defining a chamber and having an opening; at least one pair of optical waveguides, each having an input end portion and an output end portion, the input end portion of a first waveguide being optically coupled to a source of light and the output end portion of a second waveguide being optically coupled to a light intensity detector; a membrane having two opposite surfaces extending across the opening to form a sealed-off chamber inside the housing; a head, including the input end portion of the second optical waveguide and the output end portion of the first optical waveguide, affixedly located at least in proximity to each other, each of the output end portion of the first waveguide and input end portion ofthe second waveguide having an optical axis and an output face, the output face being cut at an angle theta with respect to the axis, the axes forming forming an angle alpha between them, wherein, upon operation, the light emerging from the output end portion of the first waveguide impinges on a surface of the membrane at an angle of incidence beta , and wherein beta = f( alpha , theta ); the microphone/sensor further including pressure-equalizing means for equalizing the pressure on the two surfaces of the membrane.
