    • An angularly adjustable traction apparatus (10) for applying tractions forces to a patient's limb. The apparatus (10) includes a base platform (20) provided with a rail unit (14) that is raised relative to the base platform (20), a limb immobilizing unit (12) and pulley unit (13) slidably disposed on the rail unit (14) and adapted to be angularly adjusted relative thereto. The pulley unit (13) includes a support post (50) and a pulley member (60) suspended from the support post (50) and provided with a bracket (61) whose height can be varied to the base platform (20). Another embodiment includes a generally rectangular platform (320) having an elongated track groove (330) disposed in one side (323) for slidably receiving a limb immobilizing unit (312) and pulley unit (313) having a traction device (390). The limb immobilizing unit and the pulley unit (313) are provided with securing elements (350), (350') to select locations within the track groove (330) and maintain angular orientations relative to the platform member (320).

    • A hand-held instrument such as a ball point pen, felt tip pen or a glue pen, having an elongate body (1) with a working tip (8) thereof located at one end of the body. A cap (2) is used to protect the working tip when the instrument is not in use and the cap is arranged to be movable both in a direction transverse to the longitudinal axis of the body (1) and also along the body together with a yoke (4) movably mounted on the body. Retaining devices (6, 7) are preferably provided at each end of the elongate body to prevent the yoke (4) and cap (2) being removed from the body (1). Conveniently, the yoke is formed separately from the cap and is connected thereto by a link arm (5), pivotally mounted on the yoke. Alternatively, the yoke (40) may be formed integrally with the cap (20) as a transverse extension of the cap extending from an open end (21) thereof. The retaining devices (6, 7) are preferably formed of rings of material folded into or fitted around the instrument body and are of a thickness sufficient to obstruct movement of the yoke (4) along the body (1). The body conveniently has an engagement device (9) at the end of the body (1) remote from the working tip (8) for engageably supporting the cap (2) when the hand-held instrument is in use. Advantageously, the cap cannot be removed from the body of the instrument and cannot be swallowed by a child. Moreover, the life of a felt tip pen for example is maximised because the cap remains with the pen for covering the tip when not in use.

    • A laser marking apparatus for marking a moving workpiece such as a wire or cable directs a substantially constant rapidly pulsed beam of laser radiation in the U.V. band towards a low inertia, low mass rotatable mask with character apertures disposed around its periphery. The mask is driven asynchronously and slaved to the laser to present successive character apertures in the beam at each pulse. The drive system has a pre-stored drive profile for each possible angular increment to ensure that mask is very rapidly indexed between characters. Also disclosed is an optical transformation scheme for optionally transforming the mask characters to reduce the mask size, and a solid state spatial light modulator for obviating the need for a rotatable mask.
