    • Pipe insulation sleeve and adhesive construction therefor, having a reduced amount of stress applied to the adhesive. A flexible foamed elastomeric tubular pipe insulation sleeve (20) has a longitudinally extending slit (28) which enables the sleeve (20) or jacket to be placed around a pipe (22) or portion thereof. An adhesive is applied to opposite walls (30, 32) of the slit (28), forming an adhesive joint, in order to hold the construction together after the insulation sleeve (20) has been placed around a section of pipe (22). Stress on the adhesive joint is minimized or reduced in either of two ways. First, the tubular sleeve (20) is formed with a V-shaped slit (28) in which the opposite faces (30, 32) or walls of the slits (28) intersect at an acute angle theta . In a preferred embodiment, the V is inverted (i.e., the open end of the V faces inwardly) and formed essentially along the minor axis of the elliptical shape which the sleeve (20) assumes over time. In a completed construction in which the tubular sleeve (20) (encircles a portion of pipe (22), the walls (30, 32) of the slit (28) are in facing engagement with each other, and held in engagement by adhesive. In a second construction for reducing stress, adhesive is applied both to the opposite walls (30, 32) of the slit (28) as well as to longitudinally extending portions of the inner surface (24) of the sleeve (20) which are immediately adjacent to the slit (28), so that the sleeve (20) can be adhered to itself along the slit (28) and to the pipe (22) which it encircles. These two constructions can be combined. The stress on the adhesive at the slit (28) is less in either construction as compared to pipe insulation construction in which a tubular sleeve is formed with a conventional radial slit and pressure-sensitive adhesive is applied either to walls of the slit or to outer surfaces of the sleeve adjacent to the slit by means of a flap which bridges the slit.

    • A double-sided silicone-coated liner (2), particularly adapted for use in self-wound tapes is described which is a paper upon which a silicone coating layer (8) is deposited on one surface and a water vapor permeable silicone coating layer (6) is applied on the liner's opposed second surface. The liner surfaces may optionally be clay coated, the clay coating adjacent to the water vapor permeable silicone coating layer (6) also having water vapor permeability. The tape (60) made using this particular liner typically additionally has a carrier layer (4) with an adhesive (12) sandwiched between the silicone coating layer (8) and the carrier (4). The tape (60) is prepared by the steps of coating the liner (2) with a silicone layer (8) on a first side of the liner; drying the silicone layer (8); laminating a carrier (4) layer onto the adhesive (12); coating a second side of the liner (2), opposed from the first side with a water vapor permeable silicone layer (6); drying the water vapor permeable silicone layer (6); and remoisturizing the liner (2).

    • A system, container (10), and a label (12) for monitoring, characterizing, and recording information and traits regarding the use and reuse of containers. The label (12) for monitoring the use of a container is ideally inserted between the container outside wall surface (14) and the container inside wall surface (16). The label (12) preferably includes an indicating ink (22) that incrementally changes color or changes shade when certain external energy sources are applied. The labeled container can be used in a system of monitoring, characterizing, and recording information and traits regarding containers wherein the incremental changes in the indicating ink (22) are measured.     • Adhesive compositions having improved cutting properties described herein. Compositions comprise a normally tacky, pressure sensitive acrylic adhesive containing, as an additive to reduce edge flow, from about 2 to about 10 percent by weight dry basis, preferably from about 5 to about 8 percent by weight dry basis based on the weight of polymer solids, of a polydimethylsiloxane having a number average molecular weight of about 1,300 to about 15,000. Also disclosed are laminates comprising a facing layer coated on one side with the aforedescribed adhesive composition, and optionally a release liner. These adhesive laminates exhibit substantially reduced tendency of the adhesive to ooze at the edge when cut, without material decrease in other adhesive properties, when a multiplicity of laminate sheets is stacked and cut by means of a guillotine. Laminates herein are especially useful as drum and carton labels.
