摘要： A 1550nm DWDM optical communications network has a 1300nm remote node added to which a small number of channels can be added or dropped. The additional node includes dual wavelength couplers to enable 1300nm wavelength signals to be added or dropped. The 1300nm signals are demultiplexed using a WDM filter and connected into the transponders of the 1550nm nodes for transportation around the node. Signals for the remote network are converted to 1300nm signals at the 1550nm node transponders and multiplexed onto the network to be dropped to the network node transponder.

摘要： A method of producing green light signals, comprising coupling pump signals from at least one pump source into at least one erbium doped fibre (EDF) which cause ground state absorption (GSA), and excited state absorption (ESA) in erbium ions of the EDF, which produces green light signals, wherein the majority of the pump signals have a wavelength at which the probability of occurrence of ESA in the EDF is greater than the probability of occurrence of GSA in the EDF. The majority of the pump signals may have a wavelength in the range approximately 920nm to approximately 980nm, or in the region of 960nm. An erbium doped fibre amplifier (EDFA) (1) for amplifying traffic-carrying signals may be pumped by green light signals produced by this method. A laser which produces green light signals may be constructed, which comprises at least one EDF, coupled to at least one pump source to receive pump signals therefrom, which cause GSA, and ESA in erbium ions of the EDF, which produces green light signals, the majority of the pump signals having a wavelength at which the probability of occurrence of ESA in the EDF is greater than the probability of occurrence of GSA in the EDF.

摘要： An L-band EDFA may have three amplifier stages. In the first stage, a high power 980nm laser is used to generate C-band ASE noise which is used to pump the erbium doped fibre of the second stage. The second stage fibre is arranged as a plug-in module which connects between a first stage isolator and a mid-stage loss between the second and third stages. The desired gain of the amplifier is obtained by selecting a plug-in module with a length of fibre that will give the desired amplifier output power for a given imput power.

摘要： A method for managing timers in a system reduces the memory and time requirement to allocate and find a timer in an array (10). An expiry time (38) is calculated by combining an instantaneous clock time (32) with the timer time value, and the expiry time (38) is in significant units of time. A multidimensional array (10) comprises a plurality of unidimensional arrays (12, 14, 16). Each unidimensional array (12, 14, 16) corresponds to a significant unit of time and is split into elements. Each element of the unidimensional array (12, 14, 16) corresponds to a standard unit of time for the significant unit of time of that unidimensional array (12, 14, 16). The value of the highest order of significant units of the expiry time (38) is used to determine the position of the timer in the array (10). If any time remains in the expiry time value (39) it is placed with the timer in the array (10). When the expiry time (38) of that significant unit of time has expired, the remaining value is used to determine the position of the timer in the next unidimensional array (12, 14, 16). When no remainder remains in the expiry time value (38), the timer times out.
