    • A LCD display backlight system with improved color mixing and efficiency comprises a reflective surface, a plurality of light sources mounted on the reflective surface, a plurality of fractional wave plates and a reflective polarizer. The plurality of fractional wave plates is mounted on spaces between the plurality of light sources on the reflective surface. The reflective polarizer transmits light having a useable polarization and reflects back unused polarization of light onto the reflective surface. A portion of the unused polarization of light reflected from the reflective polarizer passes through a fractional wave plate. The reflective surface reflects the portion of the unused polarization of light through the fractional wave plate such that the polarization of the unused polarization of light is changed to useable polarization, thereby recycling the unused polarization of light into useful light.

    • An optical device for increasing the brightness of electromagnetic radiation emitted by a source and coupled into a target by folding the electromagnetic radiation back on itself. The optical device includes the source of electromagnetic radiation, which has a first width; a first light pipe with a first input end and a reflective end, the first input end having a second width; a second light pipe disposed parallel to the first light pipe, the second light pipe further having a second input end juxtaposed to the first input end of the first light pipe and an output end, the second input end having a third width; a first reflector having a first optical axis and a first focal point on the first optical axis; and a second reflector having a second optical axis and a second focal point on the second optical axis disposed substantially symmetrically to the first reflector such that the first optical axis is substantially collinear with the second optical axis. The source is located substantially proximate to the first focal point of the first reflector to produce rays of radiation that reflect from the first reflector to the second reflector and substantially converge at the second focal point; and the input ends of the first and second light pipes are located proximate to the second focal point of the second reflector to collect the electromagnetic radiation.

    • A light recovery system for a projection display with a reflector having a first and a second focal points. A source of electro-magnetic radiation is disposed proximate to the first focal point of the reflector to emit rays of radiation that reflect from the reflector and converge substantially at the second focal point. A retro-reflector reflects at least a portion of the electromagnetic radiation that does not impinge directly on the reflector toward the reflector through the first focal point of the reflector to increase the flux intensity of the converging rays. A light pipe with an input surface and an output surface is disposed with the input surface proximate to the second focal point to collect and transmit substantially all of the radiation. A first reflector is disposed proximate to the output surface to transmit a first band of radiation while reflecting a second and third bands of radiation. A second reflector is disposed proximate to the output surface to transmit the second band of radiation while reflecting the first and third bands of radiation. A third reflector is disposed proximate to the output surface to transmit the third band of radiation while reflecting the first and second bands of radiation. In the alternative, a PBS is disposed proximate to the output surface to collect and polarize substantially all of the radiation into a radiation of a first polarization and a second polarization. Radiation of the first polarization is transmitted, while radiation of the second polarization is reflected toward the output surface. A wave plate is disposed in a path of the radiation of the second polarization.

    • A multi-positional rear projection television (RPTV) capable of being placed in varying positions without compromising the orientation of the displayed image includes a projection engine for producing an image, a screen for displaying an image to an audience, a reflector for reflecting an image to a screen, image inversion circuitry for adjusting an orientation of the image to the vantage orientation of an audience depending on the position of the multi-positional RPTV, and a casing defining a substantially triangular cavity for housing at least the screen and the reflector. The screen is tilted with respect to the reflector, such that the casing forms a substantially triangular cavity with substantially zero footprint, thereby permitting the multi-positional RPTV to be mounted on a wall.
