    • Apparatus and associated systems, methods and computer program products relate to isolating horizontal jitter component(s) from vertical jitter component(s). In preferred embodiments, at least one horizontal component of jitter is distinguished from at least one component of vertical jitter by fitting a curve to a digitally acquired waveform, determining the curve slope and statistical variance about the fitted curve over at least one time period, identifying a functional relationship between the variance and slope, and determining therefrom at least one horizontal component of jitter and at least one vertical component of jitter. Random and deterministic jitter components may be aggregated, in certain embodiments, so as to identify a vertical jitter component that reflects both deterministic and random jitter. In preferred implementations, the isolated vertical jitter component is subtracted from a total jitter measurement so as to better approximate actual signal jitter.

    • A method and apparatus for displaying measurements of a waveform as icons on an oscilloscope. A plurality of analog acqusition signals C1 may be acquired by the oscilloscope of the invention. These acquisition signals are acquired in accordance with various provided probes and other acquisition hardware (2110) that are in turn controlled by an acquisition control module (2112). The user via a user interface (2115) applies various acquisition control processes to the acquired waveform in accordance with various control variables (2120) provided. Various results data are then provided to, and thereafter output from a pre-processing system (2125), and are inturn acted upon in various post processing functions (2130) employing user defined control variables (2120),resulting in processing data (2135). The post- processed data is then exported and/or imported at (2140) as necessary for further processing by the system (2145) in accordance with control variables (2120). After processing has completed, the various processed data is converted for display at (2150) on a display device (2155).

    • A system for estimating bit error rates (BER) may include using a normalization factor that scales a BER to substantially normalize a Q-scale for a distribution under analysis. A normalization factor may be selected, for example, to provide a best linear fit for both right and left sides of a cumulative distribution function (CDF). In some examples, the normalized Q-scale algorithm may identify means and probabilistic amplitude(s) of Gaussian jitter contributors in the dominant extreme behavior on both sides of the distribution. For such contributors, means may be obtained from intercepts of both sides of the CDF(Qnorm(BER) with the Q(BER)=O axis, standard deviations (sigmas) may be obtained from reciprocals of slopes of best linear fits, and amplitudes may be obtained directly from the normalization factors. In an illustrative example, a normalized Q-scale algorithm may be used to accurately predict bit error rates for sampled repeating or non-repeating data patterns.

    • A method and apparatus for acquiring a signal 110 employing a coherent timebase are provided. The method comprises the steps of defining a pattern length count 360 of a repetitive pattern in a signal 110 to be acquired, defining a number of samples per unit interval, and providing data strobes 225 synchronous to a coherent timebase. An arbitrary one of the data strobes is designated as a timing for a potential trigger 120. A number of subsequent data strobes is counted 360 in accordance with the pattern length count times the samples per unit interval and a portion of the signal corresponding to the pattern length count times the samples per unit interval is acquired beginning at a point in the signal defined by the designated arbitrary data strobe. Thereafter one or more additional portions of the signal 110 are acquired 435 corresponding to the pattern length count times the samples per unit interval at a point 150 in the signal 110 defined by when the number of subsequent data strobes reaches the pattern length count times the samples per unit interval.
