    • A display device has a plurality of display panels (21) together forming a single display screen, where each display panel (21) is connected to a display controller (24) which receives display data of a portion of a complete image for display on the display panel (21). The complete image (S1) includes one or more bounded regions (S2, S3, S4, S5) of display data. Each display controller (21) also receives position information relating to a change in lateral position and/or stacking order position of one or more bounded regions that are to be displayed at least partly on that display panel (21). If the display controller (24) determines that it does not have knowledge of display data in the bounded region (S2, S3, S4, S5) to be displayed on the display panel for which the position information was received, it obtains that knowledge from another display controller (24) that has such knowledge. The display controller (24) then processes the display data for the portion of the complete image utilising the knowledge obtained from another display controller (24),and outputs the processed display data for the portion of the complete image to the corresponding display panel (21).

    • A display control device (310) for outputting display data to frame buffers (39) for display includes an input for receiving portions of the display data, different portions being in raw form and in compressed form. A data controller (33) determines, for each received portion, whether it is in compressed form or raw form and controls the received portion to move along a first, bypass, path if it is determined that the received portion of display data is in raw form and to control the received portion of display data to move along a second path to a decompression engine (35) if it is determined that the received portion of display data is in compressed form. The decompression engine (33) decompresses the particular portion of compressed display data and forwards a corresponding portion of decompressed display data along a third path, the portions of data from the first and third paths then being output to the frame buffers (39).

    • A method, at a display control device(16), of managing memory (28) of the display control device (16), the memory (28) being used for storing display data sent from a host device (10) to the display control device (16) for display. The method involves maintaining a map (18) at the display control device(16) corresponding to the memory (28), the map(18) indicating locations corresponding to addresses of the memory (28) at which data is stored or not. The map (18)is used to determine a size of a portion of the display data, and a location on the map (18)where the portion of display data would fit into the memory. The portion of received data is then stored at the location in the memory (28)and the location on the map (18)corresponding to the location in the memory (28)is updated to indicate that the address has data stored in it. Compression parameters may be selected by the display control device (16) and sent to the host device (10) so that the compressed portion of display data will fit into a free space in the memory (28)of the display control device(16).
