    • A catheter (250, 272) is provided for uniform distribution of fluid medication within an anatomical region. One embodiment of the catheter (272) is comprised of an elongated, proximal tube (282) defining a lumen (283) and an elongated, distal tube (280) having a closed end (284). The distal tube (280) is constructed from a bio-absorbable material and also defines a lumen (281), which communicates with the lumen (283) of the proximal tube (282). Another embodiment of the catheter (250) is comprised of an elongate tubular catheter body (254) defining a lumen (268). A distal end (262) of the lumen is closed and a portion of the catheter body (254) includes a plurality of openings (266) thereby defining an infusion section of the catheter (250). A tubular sheath (252) is constructed from a porous material and is positioned over the infusion section. The tubular sheath (252) extends at least a length of the infusion section. The tubular sheath (252) and the catheter body (254) are configured such that fluid within the lumen (268) must pass through the tubular sheath (252) to exit the catheter (250).

    • The present invention provides a catheter for the delivery of fluid medication across an anatomical region. In accordance with one embodiment, the catheter comprises an elongated tube with a plurality of exit holes along an infusion section of the catheter, and an elongated flexible porous member residing within the tube and forming an annular space between the tube and the member. In accordance with other embodiments, the catheter includes a tube having a plurality of exit holes in a side wall of the tube. The exit holes may combine to form a flow-restricting orifice of the catheter. Advantageously, fluid within the catheter flows through all of the exit holes, resulting in uniform distribution of fluid within an anatomical region. In one particular embodiment, the catheter comprises a tube having elongated exit slots therein. In accordance with other embodiments, the catheter includes an elongated tubular member made of a porous membrane. The porous membrane is configured so that a fluid introduced into an open end of the tubular member will flow through side walls of the tubular member at a substantially uniform rate along a length of the tubular member. In accordance with other embodiments, the catheter includes an elongated "weeping" tubular coil spring attached to an end of, or enclosed within, a tube. Fluid within the spring and greater than or equal to a threshold pressure advantageously flows radially outward between the spring coils. Advantageously, the fluid is dispensed substantially uniformly throughout a length of the spring.

    • A spring-actuated infusion syringe includes a housing having an open distal end, with a spring-loaded piston disposed for axial translation in the housing. The piston is biased toward the distal end of the housing. The syringe also includes a barrel for containing a liquid medicament, the barrel having a distal end having a fluid passage therethrough and an open proximal end. A plunger is disposed in the barrel for axial translation therein. The proximal end of the barrel is axially insertable into the distal end of the housing, whereby the piston enters the proximal end of the barrel and engages the plunger. In use, the barrel is filled with a medicament through the fluid flow passage, and the flow of medicament from the syringe is obstructed. The proximal end of the barrel is inserted into the distal end of the housing, whereby the piston enters the proximal end of the barrel. The plunger, immobilized by the hydrostatic pressure of the liquid in the barrel, pushes the piston proximally against its biasing force. An engagement between an annular barrel flange and an internal housing thread retains the barrel at the desired axial position within the housing. To deliver the liquid from the syringe, the obstruction is removed. The hydrostatic pressure in the barrel being relieved, the biasing force of the piston pushes the plunger distally into the barrel, displacing the liquid therefrom through the fluid flow passage.

A removable tab permits easy, rapid priming of the pump by holding the clamp in its open position regardless of the position of the button, and by holding the button in its depressed position regardless of the position of the plunger.

    • An improved syringe for delivering a viscous liquid, especially bone cement, to a surgical site, has a barrel with a distal outlet end and an open proximal end, and a plunger movable axially within the barrel, the plunger having a shaft extending proximally from the proximal end of the barrel. The plunger shaft incorporates a reinforcing structure that provides increased torsional rigidity and improved dispersion of torsional loads, and the barrel includes an outwardly and proximally flared peripheral rim around its proximal end. The peripheral rim forms a funnel that circumscribes less than 360°, and preferably about 240° of the proximal end of the barrel, thereby defining a gap in the rim that provides direct access to the open proximal end of the barrel. The rim facilitates the filling of the barrel either by pouring a liquid into the funnel, or by filling the barrel with a highly viscous, paste-like liquid directly into the open proximal end of the barrel through the gap. The shaft is formed of a pair of flattened, elongate longitudinal members that intersect at right angles to form a shaft structure that is cruciform in cross section, wherein the reinforcing structure is provided by a truss element lattice formed between the longitudinal members.
