    • An ink jet priming system (70) for an ink jet printer (10) having a reservoir (28) containing ink for ink jets (22) connected thereto and a reservoir opening (34) for receiving ink is described. The ink jet priming system (70) is provided with a seal (72) for selectively closing the reservoir opening (34). Pressurized air is supplied to the reservoir (28) from a tank (76) connected thereto through an opening (78) in the seal. The flow of air to the reservoir (28) is controlled so that there is an initial low pressure air flow to force ink into the jets (22) followed by a high pressure flow to force the discharge of the streaming discharge of the ink. A gutter assembly (80) connected to a disposable waste container (82) is provided for receiving and collecting the ink discharged during the priming process. The ink jet priming system (70) can be used with a moving print head (20) that contains two or more separate reservoirs (28) each with a separate reservoir opening (34). When used with a moving print head-multiple reservoir printer, the priming system (70) is provided with a capture assembly (74) for positioning the print head (20) so a single system can be used to seal and prime all the reservoirs (28).

    • A system and method for recording removable media (such as data CDs) that include information enabling data to be read from a proprietary standard, such as DICOM, on any predetermined computer platform without the need of specific computer hardware or software is provided. A specialist/medical facility computer receives data from a variety of sources/modalities including an image scanner, a network transporting DICOM-format data, document scanners and supporting text data therefor, and forms the data into appropriate files and directories in the DICOM format. These data files are recorded on a removable media, such as a CD, along with various applications and other information that can be executed on a computer that may not include DICOM hardware and software. To this end, the removable media can include a universal viewer application that forms associations with data stored on the media so any interested party with a PC can view the data in the same form as the original modality. In this manner the patient can provide unedited data to a variety of interested parties.

    • A high quality, relatively inexpensive rotary scanner provides both transmission and reflection scanning of documents mounted on a rotary drum. The drum translates with respect to an imaging lens located adjacent the drum and on the exterior thereof. A first illuminating (92) element surrounding the imaging lens illuminates the document on the drum for reflection scanning; a second illuminating element (162) mounted on a cantilevered arm extending along the axis of the drum illuminates the document for transmission scanning. Focusing of the image is performed either automatically or under the control of the user. A high resolution and wide dynamic range is provided by a set of photomultiplier tubes which receive light from the imaging lens by way of an aperture wheel which provides apertures of selectable size in accordance with the desired resolution. User replaceable lamp modules allow the precise positioning of high intensity replacement lamps without need for a technician.

    • A head tending apparatus (40) for an ink jet printing system (10) with at least one ink jet (22) is disclosed. The apparatus (40) includes a solvent supply system for spraying solvent (70) on the faces (27) of the ink jets (22) and in the jet openings (28). The apparatus also has a brush (42) for scrubbing the ink jet faces (27) during and immediately after the spraying process. The solvent (70) loosens and dissolves any solid matter that may have formed on the jet faces (27) or in the jet openings (28) and also deprimes any ink remaining in the jets (22) when the printer is shut down; the brush (42) cleans the loosened matter of the jet faces (27). If the printer has a rotating image insert assembly (12) with the ink jets (22) thereon, the brush (42) and a solvent jet (66) are mounted to a shell (46) adjacent the ink jets (22). The brush (42) includes a bristle-free section (56) that is normally adjacent the image insert assembly (12) and spaced away therefrom when the head tending apparatus (40) is deactivated; this prevents the apparatus (40) from interfering with the normal operation of the printer. Head tending is normally performed when the printer is shut down, or prior to the priming of the ink jets (22).
