    • A packer (100) for sealing an annular region in a wellbore is provided. The packer (100) includes a packing element (150) which is held through bi-directional forces. The packer first comprises an inner mandrel (110). Disposed around the inner mandrel are three tubulars: a top sleeve (120), a bottom sleeve (130), and a booster sleeve (140). A packing element (150) is disposed circumferentially around the outer surface of the booster sleeve (140). The top sleeve (120) and bottom sleeve (130) each include an upper compression member (124,134) which rides across the booster sleeve (140) in order to compress the packing element (150). The packing element is expanded outward from the packer to engage a surrounding string of casing (10) through compressive forces provided by the top and bottom sleeves (120,130). Thereafter, differential pressure applied above or below the packer acting on the packer element (150) and booster sleeve (140) may provide additional compression of the packer element (150).

    • Embodiments of the present invention relates to hydraulically actuated tools, which may be used to actuate a liner hanger assembly. In one embodiment, the present invention provides a hydraulic setting tool (113) for use in wellbore operations. The setting tool includes a first tubular member (130) and a second tubular member (120) disposed around the outer diameter of the first tubular member. A piston (110) is mechanically attached to an upper portion of the second tubular member and adapted to move axially in relation to the first tubular member. The piston acts to transmit a force to the second tubular member. A slip assembly (162) is operatively connected to the second tubular member and the second tubular member transmits the force to the slip assembly thereby actuating the slip assembly.

    • A ball dropping assembly (350) for dropping one or more objects, such as spherical balls, (5,5',5") into a wellbore (7). The assembly comprises a seat (330) for retaining a ball before it is released. The assembly may also comprise a ball feeding channel (380) for feeding additional balls onto the seat. A ball retaining lever (40) is provided to selectively receive and retain balls onto the seat (330), and then to release the balls individually into the wellbore (6). In one embodiment, the assembly is attached to a side bore (4) in fluid communication with a main bore in a cementing head (105). The ball-retaining lever (40) rotates into the bore (6) when releasing a ball (5'). When a plug (8) is released into the bore from a cementing head (105), the plug (8) will trip the lever (40), causing the ball-retaining lever to rotate back towards the ball-retained position. Thus, the ball dropping assembly also serves as a plug release indicator.
