    • In a network, a first network station (61) communicates with a second network station (65) using a first channel (45) from a plurality of channels. The first channel (45) has a central frequency (46). A third network station (62) communicates using a sub-channel (55) of the first channel (45). The sub-channel overlaps the first channel (45). The sub-channel (55) has a center frequency (56) that varies sufficiently from the center frequency (46) of the first channel (45) so that the first network station (61) and the second network station (65) do not lock onto packets transmitted from the third network station (62). The center frequency (56) of the sub-channel (55) is closer in frequency to the center frequency (46) of the first channel (45) than to a center frequency of any other channel in the plurality of channels.

    • A system and method for servicing inquiry commands, wherein inquiry data is stored in a memory (28) and if an inquiry command for the target device (27) is received while the target device (27) is busy processing another command, the stored inquiry data is returned in response to the command. In one embodiment, a router (25) contains a memory for storing static inquiry data corresponding to each of a plurality of sequential devices connected thereto. The first time a host (21,22, or 23) sends an inquiry command to one of the sequential devices, the router (25) routes the command to the target device (27) and stores the data returned by the device. Subsequent inquiry commands are serviced by passing the command through to the target device (27) if it is not busy, or returning inquiry data from the router's memory if the target device (27) is busy processing another command.

    • A system and method for indexing multimedia files utilizes audio characteristics of predefined audio content contained in selected multimedia segments of the multimedia files to distinguish the selected multimedia segments. In the exemplary embodiment, the predefined audio content is speech contained in video segments of video files. Furthermore, the audio characteristics are speaker characteristics. The speech-containing video segments are detected (702) by analyzing the audio contents of the video files. The audio contents of the speech-containing video segments are then characterized (604, 606) to distinguish the video segments according to speakers. The indexing of speech-containing video segments based on speakers allows users to selectively access video segments that contain speech from a particular speaker without having to manually search all the speech-containing video segments.
