    • An adjustable girth control for a tube former (16) in a packaging machine (10) for encapsulating individual rolls (14) or groups of rolls (14) in a film (18). The tube former (16) includes a forming body (46) which is shaped to envelop the product (14) passing therethrough and which has opposite adjustable forming elements (48, 50) with a variable gap (52) between them. The forming elements (48, 50) are shifted horizontally and vertically to vary the internal dimensions of the forming body (46) to accommodate rolls (14) of different diameters. The shifting of the forming elements (48, 50) can occur manually or automatically in response to the detection by a sensor (154) of the sizes of the incoming rolls (14).

    • An apparatus and method for upending an item from a prone-orientation to an upright orientation. Two interconnected conveyors are employed, a first lower conveyor (14) and a second upending conveyor (12). The lower conveyor includes a series of slats (36) which may be raised to engage one end of an item to be upended. The second conveyor includes a series of spaced rods (82) located to engage the opposite end of the item to be upended. When an item is engaged between a raised slat and a rod, the distance between the slat and rod is retained essentially constant and the rod is raised relative to the slat to upend the item from the prone orientation to an upright orientation.

    • A method and apparatus for gripping a bag (80) and downstream handling, such as application of a header label (112) to the bag. The bag (80), which has previously been filled with a product, is presented to the apparatus at an upstream bag presentation and accepting station (12) and is gripped proximate its top. It is then transferred from the upstream bag accepting station (12) to a downstream bag release station (16). Before being released, the bag travels to an intermediate label application station (14) where a label (112) is readied, the label (112) then being transferred upstream to a second position and applied to the bag (80). Thereafter, the bag (80) proceeds downstream, with the label (112), and the label (112) is sealed to the bag (80). A series of continuously recirculating grippers (18) are employed for accepting a stream of discreet bags (80) in a continuous manner. The apparatus operates continuously so long as bags (80) are presented for application of a label (112).

    • An apparatus (10) for enveloping successive groups of items (20) in plastic film (72) as the items traverse a linear path. Items (20) are gathered in a group, and the group of items (20) is then inserted in a tubular packaging film (72) as the items (20) and the film (72) are conveyed at the same linear velocity. After the items (20) are completely enveloped in the film (72), the film (72) is severed and sealed to fully encapsulate them in the film (72). A vacuum is used to eliminate excess air generated within the tube, and also, in one form of the invention, form side gussets as sealing dies (86, 88) are closed. A tight package made at speeds results, with no need for any holes in the film (72) to relieve internal air pressure.
