    • The present invention provides, in one aspect, an adjustable spanner having one fixed jaw (10) and one movable jaw (20), the fixed jaw being mounted on or formed integrally with the body or handle (22) of the spanner, and the movable jaw being arranged to slide in the body or handle of the spanner relative to the fixed jaw; in which the movable jaw is formed with a projection (23) which is of rectangular cross section and which is arranged to slide in a bore or slot (18), in the fixed jaw or body of the spanner, of a corresponding rectangular cross section, said projection (23) being formed with a pair of tangs (40) which engage in respective re-entrant grooves (21) formed in a face (41) of said rectangular bore or slot (18) which is adjacent the movable jaw (20). In a further aspect the invention provides an adjustable spanner having one fixed jaw (10) and one movable jaw (20), the fixed jaw being mounted on or formed integrally with the body or handle (22) of the spanner, and the movable jaw being arranged to slide in a slot or bore (18) in the fixed jaw or the body of the spanner, in which the body and/or the handle of the spanner is formed in two halves (22a, 22b) which are split along the length of the spanner and attached together to encompass and retain the movable jaw (20).
