    • Apparatus for controlled delivery of molecules at a predetermined region of interest within a fluid- filled cavity or vessel by means of ultrasound activatable particles.     • A method and apparatus for the integration of an ultrasound transducer with a SPECT imaging system is disclosed. The ultrasound transducer allows the delivery of particle-born drug therapies or thermally active therapies at the same site detected with SPECT imaging. The system includes a SPECT imaging subsystem; an ultrasound transducer for producing a signal representative of applied ultrasound and signally coupled to the SPECT imaging subsystem; and co-registering means for co-registering the signal representative of applied ultrasound in a coordinate system of SPECT imaging subsystem. The SPECT subsystem may be replaced with a SPECT/CT combined system to provide morphology that allows for treatment planning. In another embodiment, the ultrasound transducer can be used intermittently with the sequential gathering of SPECT images for tracking time-varying properties of the binding of specific SPECT contrast agents to biomarkers of disease. In this way, the ultrasound and SPECT imaging devices form a novel combination to improve patient care through improved spatial registration, therapy planning, and workflow.

In one embodiment, the variably-refracting acoustic lens includes a cavity, first and second fluid media (141, 142) disposed within the cavity, and the pair of electrodes. The speed of sound of an acoustic wave in the first fluid medium is different than the speed of sound of the acoustic wave in the second fluid medium. The first and second fluid media are immiscible with respect to each other, and the first fluid medium has a substantially different electrical conductivity than the second fluid medium.

    • An ultrasonic assembly suited for attachment to a catheter, e.g. for medical treatment. The ultrasonic assembly includes an adjustable ultrasonic focus mechanism arranged in connection with the ultrasonic transducer to adjust focus of ultrasonic waves generated by the transducer. The ultrasonic focus mechanism includes a fluid focus lens with at least two fluids separated by an interface such that ultrasonic waves are substantially reflected at the interface. At least two electrodes are arranged in connection with the fluid focus lens so as to allow adjustment of the interface shape, e.g. a curvature of the interface, when a voltage is applied to the electrodes. In preferred embodiments the electrodes are arranged so as to allow adjustment of the fluid focus lens in an elevation direction as well as in a radial direction. In simple embodiments with rotational symmetric geometry with the transducer positioned in the centre of the fluid focus lens, ultrasonic waves can be focused in an annular ring. This is e.g. suitable for ablative or coagulative necrotic treatment of human tissue, e.g. for atrial fibrillation treatment. In some embodiments, the assembly has a number of separate individually adjustable fluid focus lens compartments allowing a more detailed control of the ultrasonic focus pattern.
