    • A method for roll-forming a tubular member (10) is provided. The method includes providing a roll-forming machine (16) having a pair of rollers (22, 24) and a forming roller (26) adjacent the pair of rollers (22, 24). Further, cutting a strip (12) of sheet metal to form a segment (14) having free leading (18) and trailing (20) ends extending between a predetermined length; feeding the segment (14) between the pair rollers (22, 24); calculating the thickness (t) of the segment (14) via feedback from the pair of rollers (22, 24); automatically adjusting the position of the forming roller (26) in response to the determined thickness (t) of the segment (14); advancing the segment (14) between the pair of rollers (22, 24) and against the forming roller (26) to form an annulus (10); and forming a weld joint between the free ends (18, 20).

    • A method of testing one of bond or fatigue strength of an elastomeric seal lip to a metal substrate and apparatus therefor is provided. The method and apparatus avoid causing inadvertent damage to the seal lip during testing. Further, the method and apparatus allow a tensile force to be applied along an axis of the seal lip along which the seal lip extends regardless of the angle of inclination of the seal lip relative to a central axis of a metal substrate to which the seal lip is attached. Accordingly, accurate and repeatable test results indicating one of bond strength of the seal lip to the metal substrate or fatigue strength of the seal lip are obtained via the method and apparatus.

    • A piston and method of construction are provided. The piston includes an upper crown having a combustion surface with an upper land depending therefrom and a lower crown having a pair of pin bosses that depend to a pair of laterally spaced, axially aligned pin bores. The upper crown is constructed as a monolithic piece of a first material having a thermal conductivity within a range of about 7 to 25 W/m-K. The lower crown is constructed from a low grade steel material having a thermal conductivity higher than the upper crown. The upper crown is joined directly to the lower crown, wherein the upper crown acts as a barrier to thermal conductivity and thus, the heat within a combustion chamber housing the piston for reciprocation therein is maintained and maximized.

    • A piston (10, 10') includes a piston body (12, 12') having an upper crown portion (16, 16') with an upper combustion dome (18, 18') against which combustion forces act. The underside of the upper combustion dome (18, 18') comprises an under-crown region (60, 60'). The piston body (12, 12') also includes a lower crown portion (26, 26') with a pair of pin bosses (36, 38) spaced apart for pivotally adjoining a connecting rod. An outer oil gallery (31, 31 ') is formed as an inclusion between the upper (16, 16') and lower (26, 26') crown portions. The outer oil gallery (31, 31 ') has an oil inlet (50, 50') and an oil outlet (52, 52'). A tubular oil jet (54, 54') is affixed in fluid communication with the oil outlet (52, 52') and extends toward the under-crown region (60, 60') where oil is discharged during reciprocation of the piston (16, 16'). Cooling oil from the outer oil gallery (33) is channeled by the oil jet (54, 54') to the under-crown region (60, 60') providing supplemental cooling in a passively actuated system.
