    • The apparatus comprises a die cavity (33) which conforms with the shape of a portion of a part to be formed, a punch (29) with a cavity having end walls which conforms (43, 44) with the shape of another portion of the part to be formed, and means for causing relative movement of the die and the punch. The blank (21) and the fitting (20) have a microstructure wherein substantially all of the grain is oriented parallel to the longitudinal axis thereof. The method comprises producing a billet (22) having a maximum dimension in a given direction less than X, placing the billet in the die (31), while the punch (29) and the die (31) are separated, so that punch/die relative movement will force the part of the billet having the maximum dimension less than X between the opposed walls where the cavity has the minimum lateral dimension of X, and causing relative movement between the punch and the die.
