    • An implantable lead, and method of manufacturing same, and a system and method for stimulation. The lead (104, 204) has proximal and distal ends (122, 230) having, respectively, a connector portion (114, 218) with a terminal (116, 220, 222) and an electrode (126, 240, 242). An optically switched device (124, 232, 234, 236, 238) is electrically connected to the electrode and to the terminal. An optical fiber (120, 228) is optically coupled to the connector portion (114, 218) at one end and to the optically switched device (124, 232, 234, 236, 238) at another end. The optically switched device (124, 232, 234, 236, 238) conducts a stimulus from the terminal (116, 220, 222) to the electrode (126, 240, 242) in response to an optical signal transmitted over the optical fiber (120, 228).
