    • An exhaust system (2) for reducing particulate and NO 2 emissions from diesel engine exhaust gases comprises: a diesel particulate filter (10); an inlet (6) for receiving exhaust gases from a diesel engine; a first conduit (4) capable of providing a first fluid connection between the inlet (6) and the diesel particulate filter (10); a second conduit (12) capable of providing a second fluid connection between the inlet (6) and the diesel particulate filter (10); a diesel oxidation catalyst (14) in the second conduit (12), the diesel oxidation catalyst catalysing hydrocarbon combustion and the formation of NO 2 and having high HC activity and high NO 2 activity; a valve mechanism (18) for selectively directing exhaust gases from the inlet (6) to the diesel particulate filter (10) through the first conduit (4) or the second conduit (12); wherein exhaust gases that pass from the inlet (6) to the diesel particulate filter (10) through the first conduit (4) but not the second conduit (12) will not encounter a diesel oxidation catalyst; and a fuel injector (16) for injecting fuel upstream of the dieseloxidation catalyst (14).

    • An engine exhaust system comprises: an exhaust pipe (18) having a bend routing an exhaust flow in a curved path, the exhaust pipe having an interior surface and being in fluid communication with a catalyst (22) downstream of the bend. A shield member (4) mounted in the exhaust pipe and spaced apart from the interior surface of the exhaust pipe, the shield member comprising a generally tubular or frustoconical structure having an open proximal end (14) and an open distal end (16), the proximal end (14) being disposed such that the injector tip (28) is inside the shield member (4), the distal end (16) being disposed at or towards a centre line (26) of the exhaust pipe. A vane (6) mounted in relation to the shield member (4), the vane being arranged and adapted to direct a proportion (24) of exhaust flow from upstream of the bend (30) in a substantially arcuate path into the proximal end (14) of the shield member (4).

    • A method of cleaning a vehicle exhaust system filter (1), the filter (1) having a first end (11) and a second end (10) and comprising a plurality of elongate channels (6) containing debris (19) to be removed, comprises the steps of: (i)providing a chamber (14) having an outlet in fluid communication with the first end (11) of the filter(1); (ii)covering the second end (10) of the filter (1) to hinder fluid flow out of the second end of the filter; (iii)introducing a flow of liquid into the chamber(14); (iv)stopping the flow of liquid into the chamber (14) when the chamber and channels (6) of the filter are substantially filled with liquid; (v)introducing a pulse of compressed gas into the chamber(14), and (vi)uncovering the second end (11) of the filter (1) to allow the gas to force said debris(19) and liquid (17) out of the second end (10) of the filter(1). The invention also provides apparatus for use in the method.

    • The invention relates to a gas treatment apparatus (1) for treating a gas stream. The gas treatment apparatus (1) comprising addition means (14) for adding a reducing agent (12) to a gas stream passing through the apparatus (1), a guide chamber (8), a mixing conduit (18) and a catalytic treatment chamber (16) containing a catalytic treatment element (20). The apparatus (1) is arranged such that gas must pass through the mixing conduit (18) to pass from the guide chamber (8) to the catalytic treatment chamber (16). The mixing conduit (18) includes an outer wall (22) surrounding a mixing axis (20) within the guide chamber (8). The outer wall (22) including at least one aperture (30) through which a gas can enter the mixing conduit (18) from the guide chamber (8). The at least one aperture includes guide means (32) associated therewith for causing at least some of a gas passing through the at least one aperture (30) to flow circumferentially about the mixing axis (20) within the mixing conduit (18) before entering the catalytic treatment chamber (16).
