    • Processing circuitry is provided for processing a plurality of signals received from sense coils (21, 23 and 25) forming part of a position encoder used to encode the relative positions of two relatively movable members. The position encoder is such that each of the plurality of signals from the sense coils varies sinusoidally with the relative position of the members but out of phase with respect to each other. The processing apparatus comprises mixers (71, 73 and 75) for multiplying each of the received signals with one of a corresponding plurality of periodic time varying signals, each having the same predetermined period and a different predetermined phase, and an adder (93) for adding the signals from the mixers. The phase of the mixing signals are chosen so that the output signal from the adder contains a single periodic component having the predetermined period whose phase varies with the relative position of the two members.

    • A position encoder is provided for indicating the relative position between first and second relatively movable members. One of the members carries a multi-pole magnetic scale (7) which generates a magnetic field whose magnitude and direction vary with position and the other member carries at least one sense conductor (27). A saturable magnetic element (23) is located in the positionally varying magnetic field of the magnetic scale (7) and an excitation winding (25) is provided which, when energised, generates a magnetic field which interacts with the positionally varying magnetic field to cause different portions of the saturable magnetic element (23) to saturate and desaturate at different times. The arrangement of the sense conductor (27) is such that as the magnetic element (23) is driven into and out of saturation, it outputs a signal which is indicative of the position of the magnetic scale (7) relative to the sense conductor (27).

    • A transducer is described for use in a position sensor. The transducer has a magnetic field concentrating member, such as an elongate ferrite rod, a first coil operable, in use, to couple with a first portion of the magnetic field concentrating member positioned adjacent the first coil and a second coil operable, in use, to couple with a second portion of the magnetic field concentrating member positioned adjacent the second coil, the second portion being spaced along the magnetic field concentrating member from the first portion. The transducer also comprises a resonator having a coil wound around a portion of said magnetic field concentrating member which is located between said first and second portions. The transducer is arranged so that, during use, the electromagnetic coupling between the resonator and at least one of the first and second coils varies as a function of the relative position between the elongate field concentrating member and that coil. In this way, separate processing electronics can process the signals obtained from the transducer to determine the desired position information.
