    • An inertial actuator assembly comprises an actuator chassis adapted to be secured in use to a structure subject in use to external vibration forces, a proof mass ( m a ) supported with respect to the chassis by a proof mass resilient means, and a force generating transducer means acting between the chassis and the proof mass for subjecting in use the proof mass to a force ( f a ) applied relative to the chassis, a controller arranged to control in use the excitation of the transducer means, wherein the assembly comprises a feedback means H( jω ) responsive to a measurement of the displacement ( x ) of the proof mass relative to the chassis, the controller being arranged to modify the excitation of the force generating transducer means in response to a feedback signal from the feedback means. The feedback signal may be proportional to the displacement, the integral of the displacement, the derivative of the displacement, or to any combination of these.

    • A system for attenuating noise in a cabin of a vehicle is provided in which the vehicle has an interior wall defining the cabin and an exterior wall defining a cavity between the interior wall and the exterior wall. A plurality of actuators are arranged within the cavity, on the interior wall or on the exterior wall for providing a physical actuation resulting in an acoustic disturbance. A plurality of sensors are arranged in the cavity on the interior wall, or on the exterior wall to provide indications of acoustic disturbances. A control system uses the indications from the sensors to generate control signals for the actuators. In one arrangement the sensors are arranged in an array interspersed between the actuators which are also arranged in an array. A drive signal for each actuator is then generated using the signals from sensors adjacent to the actuators.

    • A stereophonic sound reproduction system is aimed at synthesizing at a multiplicity of points (L) in the listening space an auditory effect obtaining at corresponding points (K) in the recording space, to compensate for crosstalk (C21, C12) between the loudspeakers, the acoustic response of the listening space, and imperfections in the frequency response of the speaker channels. Each speaker channel incorporates a digital filter (H) the characteristics of which are ajusted in response to measurements of the reproduced field. The digital filters are provided by an inverse filter matrix (H) of which the matrix elements (Hij) are determined by a least squares technique, applied so as to minimise the sum of the squared errors resulting from the difference between the actual system impulse response and a desired impulse response. A full bandwidth signal is transmitted by a bypass route for combination with the output signal (9) from the filter, the bypass route including a delay means (F).

    • A sound reproduction system for providing sound to adjacent users comprises first and second speaker means positioned respectively adjacent to the intended head positions of first and second users. Each speaker means comprises a pair of speakers, one of which (q, p) faces inwards towards the head position (po) of the user, the other of which faces outwards generally towards the head position (pl)of the second user. Filter means H 1 control the input to the outwardly facing speaker (qsl)relative to the input applied to the inwardly facing speaker (qp) so as to reduce the sound that would be perceived by the second user due to the first speaker means (qp). The filter means (H 1 ) may provide a delayed and weighted version of the signal input to it. A sound reproduction system alternatively comprises a feedforward compensating filter means (H 1 , H 2 ) having an input connected to the first speaker means (q2) and an output connected to the second speakers means (ql) configured to provide the second speaker means (ql) with a modified version of the signals fed to the first means and so reduce the sound perceived by the second user (p5)as emitted by the first speaker means (q2).

    • An adaptive control system for controlling a plant (C) generates an input signal for control of the plant. An adaptive response filter (W) which has a plurality of time domain filter coefficients which are operative to filter the input signal to provide a control signal for the plant (C) so that the plant generates the required output signal. A model filter ( C ) which also has a plurality of time domain filter coefficients models the response of the plant and filters the output signal using the filter coefficients in relative time reverse order to provide at least one filtered output signal. A delay (Z) delays the input signal for a predetermined time period. The adaptive response filter receives the delayed input signal and collates this with a respective filtered output signal and adjusts its filter coefficients using the outcome of the collation to adjust the control signal for the plant such that the output signal of the plant converges towards a required level.
