    • A fastener assembly (12) for engaging vertebral elements has a connecting body (22) that includes a receptacle (40) extending between a first opening (36) and a second opening (38) and a fastener (20) with a head (26) movably supported in the receptacle (40). The fastener (20) includes a vertebral engaging portion (30) extending distally through the second opening (38). The fastener assembly (12) further includes a post (24) that has an elongated body with a proximal portion (44) extending proximally from the first opening (36) of the connecting body (22), a distal engagement end (56) in the receptacle (40), and an adjusting portion (48) extending between the proximal portion (44) and the engagement end (56). The adjusting portion (48) is movably engaged to the connecting body (22) to position the engagement end (56) relative to the head (26) of the fastener (20) to substantially fix the head (26) in the receptacle (40) and resist movement of the fastener (20) with respect to the post (24) and the connecting body (22).
