    • A peptide clearing agent is provided for clearance of a conjugate of an enzyme and a binding molecule which binds specifically at a target location from a non-target location in a subject. The peptide clearing agent binds the active site of the enzyme. The peptide also binds to the asialoglycoprotein receptor expressed by hepatic cells to facilitate clearance through the liver. The peptide may be glycosylated to facilitate clearance through the liver by binding to hepatic cells expressing an asialoglycoprotein receptor. Typically, the peptide prevents or inhibits enzyme activity upon binding to the enzyme and is not substantially modified by the enzyme activity. The peptide may be based upon the dipeptide amino-naphthoic acid (ANA) - glutamate (GIu) and may comprise the amino acid sequence serine (Ser) - Alanine (Ala) - amino-naphthoic acid (ANA) - glutamate (GIu). In such cases, the enzyme of interest is typically CPG2.

    • A skin treatment formulation, e.g. in the form of an ointment or gel or a skin dressing, comprises a photocatalytic agent, e.g. flavine mononucleotide, and an electron donor substance, e.g. ethylene diamine tetra acetic acid, conveniently in the form of an agar gel (10). On exposure to light in the presence of oxygen (e.g. from the ambient atmosphere) the photocatalytic agent acts to cause conversion of oxygen to hydrogen peroxide. If this reaction occurs on or in the vicinity of skin, the hydrogen peroxide so produced can have a localised antibacterial effect. By controlling exposure to light, so hydrogen peroxide can be generated in situ in the vicinity of skin in a way that has not hitherto been possible.

    • Apparatus for detecting a specific target odour comprises: a detector unit adapted to have removably associated therewith a holding unit for housing at least one insect in a predetermined position; means for exposing an insect in a holding unit associated with the detector unit to a sample of gas to be tested; and means for enabling monitoring of a response of the insect to the sample thereby to detect a response indicative of the target odour. In use of the apparatus, a holding unit housing at lest one insect that responds in a detectable manner to the target odour is associated with the detector unit. A sample of gas to be tested is supplied to the apparatus, for exposure to the insect or insects in the holding unit. The insect is monitored for a response indicative of the target odour, thus enabling determination as to whether or not the target odour is present in the sample. Because the holding unit is not part of the detector unit but is removably associated with therewith, the holding unit can be used to transport an insect or insects housed therein from a first, remote location, e.g. where insects are raised and conditioned, to a point of use at a second location where the detector unit is located. The detector unit may be a permanent or semi-permanent fixture at a point of use, or may be in the form of a portable unit. Also disclosed is a method of detecting a specific target odour.

    • A process for carrying out a label-linked specific binding assay, e.g. an immunoassay, comprising the steps of: providing in an aqueous reaction zone a member of a specific binding pair to participate in the assay, linked to a label which either is a first coreagent which is reactive with a second coreagent in a reaction to produce a detectable assay result, or is a generator of said coreagent; providing a dispersed quantity of said second coreagent in said reaction, or of a generator of said coreagent, within a discretely bounded zone adjacent to said aqueous reaction zone and formed by a zone-forming carrier material, which also carries in immobilised form a member of said specific binding pair; providing in said aqueous reaction zone a consumer of one of said coreagents in said reaction, thereby to ensure the substantial absence of said coreagent in said aqueous reaction zone; wherein said discretely bounded zone comprises a barrier sufficient to prevent entry of the consumer reagent from said aqueous reaction zone into the bounded zone, thereby to separate the consumer reagent from the dispersed quantity of second coreagent or generator thereof in the bounded zone; and allowing the specific binding reactions to take place whereby the assay reaction results in the binding of a variable quantity, dependent on the quantity of labelled member of said specific binding pair directly or indirectly to said immobilised specific binding material, so that said detectable assay result is produced by reaction of bound label or said coreagent generated by said bound label with said coreagent in said bounded zone.
