    • An image is scanned using image blocks and a texture regularity vector set is determined for each image block. For each image block being processed, a group of texture regularity vector sets for a set of previously processed image blocks is included in a candidate set. Update texture regularity vector sets are then generated (207) from the group of texture regularity vector sets and these are added to the candidate set. For each vector set, a match measure is generated (211) between the image block and a set of candidate image blocks offset from the image block by vectors of the vector set. A texture regularity vector set is then selected (213) for the image block dependent on the match measures. The invention may allow computationally efficient and accurate determination of texture regularity vector sets that reflect the regularity of textures of the image.

    • An encoder comprises a receiver (101) for receiving a video signal comprising at least one image. An estimator (107) determines a veiling luminance estimate for at least part of a first image of the at least one image in response to image content of one or more of the images. The veiling luminance estimate reflects an amount of eye glare generated in the eye by the image when rendered. A quantization adapter (109) determines a quantization scheme for the at least part of the first image in response to the veiling luminance estimate and an encoding unit (103, 105) encodes the video signal using the quantization scheme for the at least part of the first image. The veiling luminance estimate may be low-pass filtered to emulate human luminance adaptation. A corresponding decoder is provided. Improved encoding can be achieved, especially for High Dynamic Range images.

    • The invention relates to upscaling of images such as upscaling of video images from standard definition to high definition. An input image is upscaled to a resolution enhanced image (207) by weighting pixel values in the input image depending on a match metric combining two match metrics. A first image generator (103) generates a blurred version of the input image and a second image generator (103) generates an upscaled 5 interpolated version. The first metric is generated bycomparing pixel sets of the blurred image and the upscaled interpolated image. A second metric is generated by comparing pixel sets of the input image and already synthesized pixel values of the resolution enhanced image (207). For each location in a search area, a resolution enhancement processor (107) generates the combined match metric and uses this to weigh the pixel value of that location when 10 generating the unknown pixel value of the resolution enhanced image (207).
